Well after finally arriving in Phuket it wasn't what we expected really. But this is probably due to the fax that the bay we were staying in (Kamala) is still recovering slowley from the Tsunami.
Our accomodation was fab, we even had our own living room with TV and DVD player, plus a swimming pool.
We spent the first few days by the beach and trying the local food, which was both amazing and cheap! Generally dishes were roughly $1. The only downside was the amount of touts hasseling you all day long on the beach. On the upside though the locals were very accomodating and couldn't do enough for you.
On our last day we decided that we would take a day trip to the Phi Phi Islands (were The Beach was filmed). We woke all excited and headed to wait for the bus...only to find 20 minutes later we were still waiting....We decided to check the itinery and to our shock we found we had missed the bus by an hour! Panic set in and Shazzer suggested a taxi so we could maybe still catch the speedboat before it left the bay...Well we have never experienced anything like it in our lives! I know they are crazy drivers but this guy took the biscuit, overtaking on bends at 80mph, undertaking, dicing with mountain edges and oncoming traffic!
We were relieved to get there only to be greeted by 50 waiting tourists and a guide who kindly pointed directly at us and shouted - HERE THEY ARE, NOW WE CAN GO! We were about 20 minutes late! We thought that would be it for rough journeys that day, but oh no the speedboat was worse. We still have back ache now, the sea was really rough and the boat continually left the water and slammed back down for over an hour. It was worse than any ride at Hull fair! oh that and the Japanese who had travel sickness and were throwing up everywhere. The day overall was good and the Islands picturesque although very busy with tourists also on day trips!
So that was Phuket, we had a flight out to Bangkok on 7th November, which we only got on by the skin of our teeth, literally......too busy choosing books in the Thailand WHSmith that we missed the announcement that our gate number had changed! If we had been 20 seconds later we would have missed it. They had shut the boarding gate and we had to run down to the plane....if this had have been Easyjet they wouldn't have let us on!! We boarded AGAIN with everyone looking at us and tut tutting...Another lesson learned?? :) - Maz you will empathise with this one!
