Emma and Martin's Travels
Hi all
Hope ur all well. We are in a town called Denham now - apparently the most western town in Oz. Since we last posted a msg we've travelled about a bit. We got the train from Perth to Fremantle on the the 3rd Jan and stayed there till the 7th. It is a really nice wee harbour town and we had fish and chips at some award winning fish and chip restaurant on the harbour front - apparently they're western Oz's finest fish and chips - they were v good!
We got the ferry over to Rottnest Island - takes bout 40 minutes - its really nice on the island - the beaches were lovely. On the way back the water was a bit stormry and a few people looked like they might be sickk - haha.
We got the train back to Perth, then an overnight bus up to Coral Bay. We got the bus at 8pm and arrived at Coral Bay at 2pm the next afternoon - was quite a long journey. At one of the stopping stations the temperature was 42degrees - you could pretty much feel the skin burning - so we just ducked into the shade.
Coral Bay was really nice - the beach there was like one of the ones that you see on travel magazines. The sand was white and the water was crystal clear - very nice. Just of the beach was the Ningaloo Coral Reef - it starts about 3m from the shore so yu could just walk off the beach into some great snorkling - we saw some really colourful tropical fish and the coral looked amazing - just like big flowers at some bits. Martin bought a snorkel set and spent quite a bit of time in the water - i didn't really like the idea of putting on the mask so i had to work up the courage to go in but it was really good when i did - i know i'm a big woose!
One day we walked round the beach about 500m from where we had been spending our time snokling and sunbathing to a Reef Shark nursery, it was where all the sharks would come in from the sea to mate, it was pretty amazing and slightly worrying to think that we had been snorkling really close by with all these killer fish swimming about. We went along in the afternoon so there was about 30 sharks there, which was pretty ijmpressive, but apparently in the mornings there can be hundreds - oooooooooooo! They were roughly about 1m in length so not big enough to kill you but a bite would have hurt! Martin was brave enough to go into the water up to his ankles to take some photo's - what a hero!
On the way along to the sharks we nearly walked on top of a snake on the beach, it was about 1m long to and brown - emma was most concerned about this - I thought it was quite funny cause it slithered away quite quickly - but as emma says it could have killed us!
Coral Bay was really nice, in the evening there wasn't a whole lot to do, we spent most of our time playing pool at the bar - Martin 13 Emma 2 - Martin potting the black early on Emma's 2 wins, but during the day we were just at the beach snorkling and at the pool - so it was really relaxing and the scenery was beautiful. We would definitely go back to Coral Bay - and recommend it to anyone on the west coast of Oz - the pic on the postcard is from coral bay.
We got the bus down to Monkey Mia on 13th and stayed there for 3 nights. We went on a Catamaran trip yesterday afternoon for 2.5 hrs - we got to see some dugongs - yeh we had no idea what they were before either - kinda big brown cross between a dolphin and a seal like creatures, about 3m long - we also saw some dolphins and loggerhead turtles! The dolphins come right into the bay at Monkey Mia to feed and we saw a couple of them in the afternoon - they were only a couple of metres form the shore and we managed to get some film of them - that was pretty cool.
We got the bus to Denham today and are staying here tonight then moving on tmrw - it is absolutely roasting here so have stayed indoors and in the pool throughout the day - at 11.30am it was 36 degrees - too hot! We go to Kalbari tmrw for 3 nights then Cervantes for 2 nights after that - that is where the pinnacles are - Martin is threatening to run through them naked like Billy Connely but i doubt he will! After that we return to Fremantle for a couple of nights before flying from Perth to Cairns on the 24th.
Better go now cause its sooo hot in this wee internet room so need to go to the pool - its a hard life! Hope its not too cold back home - but i'm sure it is! We'd actually like some rain - i never thought i'd really want that but don't think there's much chance of that at the moment!
Stay cool hommies! One luv!
Emma and Martin
