Hallo!
So when we last left you we had just arrived in Saigon in Vietnam. It was certainly a case of being back in the bustle with so many motorbikes, it's crazy. They do just literally drive at you, but we're pros by now and have defintely mastered it! On the Friday we arrived we caught up on some much needed kip and then went to the Reunification Palace (quite boring by all accounts) and then the War Remnants Museum which documented the Vietnam War from the Vietnamese perspective. It was pretty harrowing and made us both feel a bit bummed out when we'd finished looking round. Not quite sure why some people felt the need to document the whole museum with their digital cameras-who exactly are they gonna show the photos to when they get home?! In the evening we ate at the local night market which in past experience has been quite bargainous, however on this particular occasion it left us both feeling quite violated! It was rank - how chicken fried rice can go so badly wrong I have no idea!
The next day we went to the Mekong Delta and took a boat up the Mekong River and stopped off at various villages on the way. The first stop was a coconut candy making place (btw coconut candy is pretty ming) followed by some tropical fruit in another village. We've both found a love of Dragonfruit, it's so good. We then stopped for lunch someplace else and then took the boats to a final village which included a donkey ride with a frankly obese girl from Singapore. I felt sorry for the poor donkey, and whoever said you don't get fat Asians was lying. This was the spot that our tour guide put a snake around Danielle's neck, her face was hilarious; a mixture of pure shock and horror. We then took a traditional Vietnamese rowing boat for the final leg of our journey, which was very authentic and a little bumpy!
We managed to have a Western breakfast which was delightful as we were both feeling a little noodled out. Saigon is a big city so quite a few of our Western exports such as KFC and Pizza Hut can be found here. We didn't go to either of those for breakfast tho incase you were wondering! We had a pretty chilled out day and just went for a a mooch round the shops and went for a walk in the city before going out for a gorgeous Vietnamese meal and a few drinks in one of the backpackers bars. It was a lovely way to round off our time in Vietnam. The bar did unfortunately contain some of Britain's finest - the Gran Canaria yobbos who really do make one proud to be British. We had fun nonetheless drinking "Good morning Vietnam" cocktails and playing Connect 4!!! (That makes us sound kinda sad, but it was kinda cool) There was then a power cut but fear not the trusty Vietnamese had an array of back up generators so we could carry on drinking. It was a little more complicated trying to get ready for bed later using just our head torches tho.
On our final day in Saigon we went to the Cu Chi tunnels where the Vietnamese set up pretty cunning and gruesome traps to injure/kill the American soldiers. We also got to sample the tunnels they had to live in and they were tiny. The rest of the day was pretty much spent at the airport in Saigon followed by a 14 hour stint in Bangkok airport. It was pretty dull, however we kept ourselves entertained with a trusty Starbucks and some magazines. We both screamed with glee when we spotted the green sign. Slaves to capitalism...whatever, when you've eaten noodles and rice for 5weeks you appreciate how good we have it! I also think if I was ever homeless i would go to an airport. There's literally everything you could ever want in them.
We arrived in Ko Samui yesterday and aside from meeting a rather annoying know-it-all on the bus from the airport, we're having a fabulous time. To sum up in one word the island is paradise. Beautiful sand and clear waters. Life really doesn't get much better than this. We went on a tour today of the island, which included seeing a mumified monk and rocks in the shape of male and female genitalia. All quite bizarre really. Danielle's also been making friends with the gereatrics!
Try not to be too jealous of us in the forthcoming week ;) We will be on these gorgeous islands and have heard the weather at home is rubbish! Hope you're all good, not long now until we're home xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
