Another busy day lay ahead for the Snowballs, though not before a bit of a sleep in. The original plan was for Mitchell to join Courtney for her training ride at 7am, but that turned into about 9.30am by the time they eventually got going. Being a bit concerned about them being out on their own with no way of making contact, I decided to give them 10 minutes and follow them up the coast road in the car.
They got through it well, Courtney on Wendy's mountain bike and Mitchell on my road bike, though it took a lot longer for me to catch them than I anticipated. It was really nice seeing them out on their bikes on perhaps one of the most beautiful stretches of road a cyclist could ever hope for.
After a quick shower, we jumped in the car and headed to Girona, the plan being to visit the Cathedral and then find another beach for a swim on another, stunning, hot Spanish day.
As per Wikipedia, Girona sits in the north eastern Catalonia region, beside the river Onyar. It's known for its medieval architecture, walled Old Quarter and the Roman remains of the Forca Vella Fortress.
Growing progressively tireder as the trip wears on, we half-heartedly inspected the Cathedral, Wendy and I listening to the mobile walking guides while Courtney and Mitchell drifted around the various chapels.
Wendy and I persevered for as long as possible but eventually enough was enough and we ended up sitting for a while in one of the arched walkways and just relaxing before heading off and wandering back through the ancient streets, filled with places to shop, eat and drink.
We relented at a couple of these places, first to have a quick drink and some Vegemite toast, and secondly to buy socks from a sock lover's dream shop. Yep, that's right, there was Vegemite toast on the menu and Mitchell and I decided nearly three weeks without was too long to continue when it's there on a menu in downtown Girona in the middle of Spain. It's not like we've seen many Aussies around these parts, let alone English speaking people so we've got no idea how we came to be eating Australia's favourite spread today of all days.
We finished the day off with a swim at a beach in Platja d'Aro. We probably preferred this beach over the others we'd visited, it was much bigger and less populated and felt more like home with the exception of the massive sand granules!
We made our way back to Tossa de Mar for dinner, enjoying a beachside restaurant, all of us electing to have fish with a serving of vegetables. Vegetables being the one big thing we've been missing since we've been in Andorra and Spain. Bring me a piece of broccoli!
