Monday 7th January
Up early for the 8.25am pick up to take us to the Skyrail. We were really dissapointed with the weather as it was raining with clouds everywhere. We knew that we wouldn't be able to see the rainforest very well from the height in Skyrail. However it was a good job that we took the scenic flight yesterday when the weather was decent for us to view the reef from the top!
We took the Skyrail at 9.45am and made our way to the next station called Red Peak Station. It was very dissapointing as we couldn't see anything from above. It was very misty. The ride took at least 15mins before we reached the station.
At Red Peak Station, We walked around in the heart of the rainforest. It had 175 metres board walk with rainforest information signs and over 160 species of rainforest plants to look at.
We also had the views across the Barron River Valley which we couldn't really see very well due to the foggy weather we were having!
We jumped back onto the skyrail for the next stop, Barron Falls Station. Once we arrived, we spotted the famous bird, Cassowary. It gave us a fright as we weren't expecting anything!
At this station, it had the interpretive Centre with interactive computer displays and rainforest information. We then walked to the three different lookouts with the views over the Barron River, Gorge and Falls.
It was back onto the skyrail for the final stop, the village of Kuranda. There were plenty of shops and markets to look around. It was still pouring down with rain but luckily it didn't dampen our mood! After a hour browsing around, we were getting fed up with the weather so we made our way to the railway station to pick up our boarding pass for the scenic journey at 3.30pm. While we were there, we decided to treat ourselves a typical british tea break, a cuppa with jam/cream scones!
As we still had plenty of time before catching a train, we walke along the river but the rain were coming down heavily so we didn't bother to walk all the way and returned back to the railway station! We waited till 3.15pm before boarding onto the train.
The train was old fashioned but beautiful. There were plenty of scenery to view but would be amazing if the weather was gorgeous so we could take nice photos. We stopped few times to take photos of the waterfalls and the river. After that, the journey was for at least 1hr and 30mins before arriving to Cairns.
The weather was still bad by the time we arrived to our hostel. We were concerned about our snorkelling in Great Barrier Reef which was booked for tomorrow, so we went to the reception to ask about it. They said that it would be still going ahead, no matter how bad the weather was!
In the evening, we watched a dvd till we were too tired to watch!
