The Dingo Took My Thongs
Well okay, it was a fox, but regardless Alex and I both need to invest in some new shoes. Last night we stayed at a clearing in a game reserve (used for hunting) which is on the edge of a 'lake' called Lake Alexandrina. The water goes on forever and it's so hard to believe its not just the ocean (a very cloudy and rough ocean). Alex threw a line in for the sake of it because we had squid bait from the squid he caught the night before on the Kangaroo Island Jetty, and he caught a little somethin' somethin'.
Apologies for the lack of blogs over the past week, we have pretty much been out of range in the National Park on Kangaroo Island. The week flew by, but it was absolutely amazing. I have never seen such isolated, barely touched by human bays that require hiking through rocks and dried out lagoons to get there. The water is so blue and clear! I love this side of SA so much as the hills are just beautiful, especially when the sun hits it. The Troop doesn't like the hills to say the least, and the traffic jam behind us don't like us...
I'll keep you up to date with our movements:
After Cowell (loved that place, I've added it to my list of favourite places on this trip), we headed for Adelaide but stopped for a night in Port Pirie. We pulled up on the docks and slept the night there, and woke at sunrise to throw our newly purchased crab nets out. We only caught one. I'm calling it bad luck as the guy next to us got about 7 or 8. Looks like they prefer fish head over raw chicken. The seagulls loved it though. After our lack of luck with crabbing we packed up and headed for Adelaide. Lets just say that after driving through country towns and bush for two weeks we had lost our city driving skills. We became anxious and started panicking because we didn't know where to go and the roads are all funny. After parking somewhere in the city (which is impossible as we can't go anywhere with a height limit!) we set out for China Town to have some lunch ( and to buy groceries for the week). Adelaide's alright.
We then had to head south in order to catch the Sealink Ferry the following day to KI. We pulled into a little bay called Maslin Beach. Cutest little community town ever. And a beautiful beach!!
The following day we boarded the Ferry and reached Kangaroo Island by late arvo. It was on Kangaroo Island that we classified ourselves as alcoholics, having started drinking at 8 o'clock in the morning. Since day one of our travels Alex and I have been keeping a tally of the different roadkill we see. It's fair to say that our Kangaroo tally has doubled in the last week. We saw so much wildlife, from seals to koalas and everything in between. We had a couple of big lizard friends that came to visit us everyday, they weren't shy. Our second last day in the park was a total fire ban day, meaning no one could use their gas cookers or BBQs to cook. The lovely Greek/Spanish woman (still trying to figure out what she was) camped next to us popped over to give us some potato cakes she had made the day before seeing as we couldn't cook. I could see her little head just over the Troopy which was in the way so I stood up to thank her, later realising she was only in her bra. No judgement though as she was very friendly, as was her son (and the potato cakes were amazing! Why is foreign food just so damn good?!) The following day was another total fire ban day because of the "catastrophic heat conditions" (Adelaide was 45 degrees!) which meant everyone was kicked out of the National Park. Luckily Alex and I were booked into the Caravan Park in the main town anyway, which meant escaping the heat by eating gilato in a little Italian pizza shop. That night, it was a toss up between cheap pasta packets or pizza 50cm in diameter (easy choice). It was the biggest pizza I have ever seen in my life, I was so impressed. There was about 1kg worth of seafood on top of it, never seen such generous pizza makers!! I also bought honey from the honey farm. It's delicious. The following day we left KI.
We are currently sitting metres from the river watching enviously as people pass by with their boats and jet ski's. We can't complain though, as we are sitting on the edge of The Murray with a beer in one hand and a fishing rod in the other. We are so blessed!!!
Shenae.
