Speaking of home away from home, we got together with the entire Kuhn clan for another "family reunion." When I was in Switzerland I met this crazy Canadian girl from Leduc. Later when I decided to go to the University of Alberta in Edmonton, I called Leanne to see if she had connections where I could stay since I was coming in half way through the year. Apparently she knew no one, but I was welcome to stay at her home until I found somewhere else to go... fortunately, I never found anywhere else to go. It was adoption at first sight!
Dave and Alma Kuhn (Dad and Mom) were the cutest dairy farmers you ever knew. They did everything together on the farm, and were very stabilizing and encouraging for me through this part of my 'growing up' years. Their daughter Sharon was long gone from the farm by then, Leanne came and went as she wasn't yet finished travelling... and Dallas, well, Dallas is another story altogether. As far as big brothers go, he is pretty much my favourite! Leduc was much farther from Edmonton at that time, and being a little hick from the bush, I so enjoyed living out in the country, feeding the baby calves and shooting gophers with Dallas.
Over the years we have remained "family" and my kids have come to know and love Alma as Grandma Kuhn. Dad has since passed away and the farm has been sold, but our ties are still strong and my gratitude even stronger. Around the dinner table the other night it was no surprise that we were just as loud and sardonic as ever (well Dallas was) and I was reminded yet again of how blessed I am. God's gift to me when I needed it most was family and it felt really good to be 'home' again.
