Hello,
What a day! To say I have seen some breathtaking views doesn't do it justice... I'm currently sat in the cabin with my feet up on a stool, eating chilli nuts and thawing out after a cold but great day :)
It was an early start as breakfast was at 6:45! It defiantly wasn't porridge like we get at home but it was good enough. At 7:30 we set off on our day out to do the Fjord cruise. It has been cloudy most of the day but we have managed to avoid any heavy rain.
As we drove through the mountains and Fjords, waterfalls were falling from great heights on either side of the bus. In the bottom of the valley a river thrashes over rocks and it all culminates in amazing Fjords at the bottom. Our first challenge of the day was to climb the Trollstigen Pass. Basically one of the most amazing roads I have ever seen climbing up a mountain! It really was a beautiful road, unless you were on a window seat like me!
As we climbed the road, waterfalls crashed down on the rocks adding to the drama. Our driver, Stabi, did a fantastic job and navigated the bus up brilliantly without any problem! As we reached the top we entered the cloud so then travelled for another hour or so, including a short ferry ride, before reaching an amazing viewpoint over the Geiranger Fjord, our destination.
We took plenty photos and my tripod stole the show as we got a great whole group picture! I then decided it would be a good idea to get a picture under the waterfall with my umbrella! Yes I got a good picture but I also emerge wet through!
We got back on the bus and as I dried out we got to the bottom of the pass as a cruise ship sailed up the Fjord. A hour or so later after looking around the town we boarded a ferry for a cruise of the Fjord. The views were spectacular and pictures simply don't show how high the rock faces are. All the time it was bloody freezing and I sat tight in my jeans, jumper, jacket and new hat!
When we arrived at the other end of the a Fjord Chad made our lunch. We then started the trip back home and I fell asleep as did most of the bus. Every time we arrive somewhere the crew blast out the song, These Nights, to wake everyone up! It certainly does the trick. This time we arrived back at the top do the Trollstigen but it was just about clear. I decided I would wake myself up and head out to the viewpoint in the hope it would clear. As luck would have it as I got to the end of the walk way the clouds lifted and revealed an amazing view! From around 400m up I looked out over an amazing road and valley. I am almost certain Top Gear will have filmed a feature on the road at some point!
We took lots of pictures again before Stabi plucked up the courage to drive down. For the first time he told us to put our seat belts on and then blasted out 'Highway to Hell!' After a few tricky bends we made it to the bottom where he got a well deserved round of applause! We then made our way back to the campsite and I started to write this.
To summarise Norway is proving to be a great country with some great views and sightseeing. The weather isn't great and it's constantly cold but spirits in the group are high and tonight the Viking Games start! I'm in group 1 with 8 other very competitive people, I think it's in the bag!
Another early start tomorrow as we move further up the coast. I hope you enjoyed the read....
