Phnom Penh. s***hole.

Its a tragic place, obviously centred around the fact that the tyrannic Khmer Rouge killed almost everyone between 1975 and 1979! Over 1 million people were wiped out or forced to work in the countryside. Only 50 people survived in the city when the Vietnamese took over in 1979!! A real ghostown and from the books i have read was a terrible terrible time for Cambodians.

I spent the day walking the city, looking for stuff to do. Didnt find much becuase the traffic is so terrible you cant walk the streets. Everyone wants to sell you crystal meth or prostiutes and you are not encouraged to go out after dark alone.....Honestly!

I did meet some great backpackers in the #9 guesthouse and we had a laugh in the nightclub "Heart of Darkness" but even that lived up to its name!

That said, i will retun at the weekend, as i really want to visit the torture museum and the killing fields to understand what happened here and pay my respects to the dead, the awful things that happened in the past, but i will avoid staying here any longer than necessary.

Sorry Phnom Penh, i know you are a growing city in a country desperate for tourism, but its not for me.....
