Now, I don't consider myself a great driver, but at least I am curteous and calm. That cannot be said for the drivers in South Africa!! I did my drivers licence here many, many moons ago and I don't remember the drivers being quite so bad. I have not driven in many countries, but can say these are the worst drivers I have had the misfortune to encounter so far. Traffic lights are for the most part ignored. They will not stop behind the line and wait for the red to change to green, but are constantly creeping forwards until they are half way across the road & even blocking traffic.... I have seen many drivers ahead of me stopped at a red light and when they see no traffic coming, they take off and just drive straight through the red light. I find it amazing. I have only come across one person so far who let me into the queue after I was joining from a side street... It is just not done to slow or stop for other cars. Another thing that appears to be the norm here is getting into the middle lane of a freeway (typically these are 3 lanes) and sticking to that lane even in their beat-up cars that cannot reach 60km/hour (speed limit is 100 or 120 in certain places). I do not believe they have been taught how to move into the slow lane. Another common occurance is overtaking said slow middle-lane driver by utilising the inside lane. Pinetown which is where my parents live, is approx 20kms from Durban, but approx 500 meters above sea level which means you climb massive hills once leaving the coast. The rainfall here is heavy and this affects the roads, of which many get washed away each rainy season. So, along with the appalling drivers, you have to avoid the massive pot holes which spring up daily on the roads. This does not make for calm driving. Sad to say, but if I was here longer, I may well turn into one of these appalling drivers - there's a thought!!
