Nothing was open at Heathrow, but we knew this would be the case. We found a small quiet corner in Terminal 3 and attempted to grab what sleep we could. We curled up on the cold granite floor with our bags locked to a metal guide rail. Amazingly we both slept for a few hours despite being cold. As the airport slowly came to life and the noise level increased I surprisingly found it difficult to get up... so this is what it feels like to be a tramp! We eventually boarded our flight and transferred at Madrid ready for the long 12 hour flight to Lima, Peru. The only disappointment at this stage was our 35 Euro charge for 2 cups of tea and selection of cheeses and meats - tasty though. Tired, we arrived in Lima grabbed our bags and negotiated a taxi to Miraflores. We soon felt wide awake as our Taxi driver who modelled himself on Schumacher drove what could be best described as a banger car with no seatbelts and nothing to hang onto. He drove like he had robbed a bank or he was playing a computer game. We weaved in and out of traffic braking and accelerating hard (similar to my driving style) as we navigated through rush hour traffic on the Pacific Highway to Miraflores. At one point I thought it and he did it... we drove along side the traffic queues on the gravel verge passing 50 cars before weaving back in and screeching to a halt. We finally reached hotel Bayview - the taxi driver pleased with his first place performance. "I am Anthony, I can take you on a tour tomorrow if you wish" as he gave us his mobile number. "Ok we'll call you in the morning!" Pleased to be in one piece we eventually fell into bed at 9pm local time for a well deserved rest.
