Simon & Kim's Global Adventure
The Oz bus dropped us off at the bottom of the hill where our YHA hostel was. My sunburn hurt so sturggled with my bag on my shoulders. The hostel was an old wooden house sat on the edge of a national park. Our rooms were small and opened up onto the verandah. After checking in we hopped onto a bus to do a spot of shopping. I couldn't resist two pairs of shoes, especially as the offer was buy one get one half price!
We immediately booked ourselves on a tour of Steve Irwins Australia Zoo. The following day the bus picked us up and took us along the Steve Irwin highway to our destination. Videos showed some episodes of Steve Irwins shows. Maps in hand we made our way to the far end of the park. As we made our way to the Tiger Temple we spotted some red pandas running about in some trees. On our right was Elephantasia. The elephants had a gorgeous enclosure. When we arrived at the Tiger Temple and spotted some keepers inside the enclosure playing with the tigers. It was in the Tiger Temple that I spotted a glass plaque which had a picture of Tiger Tom drawn by Bindi (Steve Irwins daughter). There were lots of these plaques which had simple statements for children to read and learn, It was so cute. As we left the elephants were going on a walk to be fed, They linked their trunks and tails together as they went.
We then headed to the crocoseum to see the croc feeding show, Beneath the areana were hundreds of signed shirts and memorials. My favourite was a surf board covered in pictures and messages. There were also huge photos of him holding snakes and crocs which we got snapped with. Steve Irwins collection of crocodile skulls and snake heads was also displayed.
The Areana had three sides full of seats and a large screen on the other. In the middle was a small rectangular performance area and a pool of water. First we saw the elephants being fed. Then the snake came out for a swim, The keeper was in the water with the snake swimming around. Following this was the bird show wih creatures flying in from all directions. Some small birds were speeding around the areana really close to our faces. Finally the crocs came out. The first croc was Monty, 40 years old and 350kg. he swam in and was fed by the keeper. At the end of the show was a video clip of Bob, Steves son in with some animals. It was adorable! He had his own sayings like 'holy moley' and struggled to pronounce 'echidnas'. He looked so much like Steve Irwin!!
For the rest of the day we went round the park posing with the bronze statue of Steve and his family. We popped into some shops to cool down in the air-con. The amount of Bindy DVDs and merchandise and shocking, a young girl must have had over fifteen videos as well as dolls and a clothing range. Towards the end of the day we went back to the Tiger Temple to watch the tiger show. The tigers were jumping about in the water catching toys. It was weird to see the keepers in the water with the tigers. On the way home the bus played more video clips of Steves family and friends explaining the amount of conservation work he did for the animals. It was sad but nice to hear what everyone had to say about him.
The main street in Noosa, Hastings Street, was very posh. It was like the Australian OC. Everyone was dressed really nicely despite it being a beach town. The beach was long with a good surf. Si hired a board from our hostel a few times and went for a surf. I watched from the beach and laughed as I saw he board flip up a few times as Si tried to climb on. Si also loved the waves which spun him over when he swam into them.
We noticed an advert for free paddleboarding in the local paper so thought we'd try it out. You basically have to stand on a board and paddle about...its harder than it sounds. Simon fell off the first time and also managed to get trapped near an expensive looking boat as he struggled to turn around. Thankfully he didnt scratch it.
We spent most our time in Noosa chilling out. We went out one night and danced til dawn - although it wasnt Simons favourite music!! Although alot posher than the towns we had previously visited it was well worth the visit.
