So after days of not being well enough we finally made it to Tikal. To avoid as much of the heat as possible we caught the bus at 4:30am so were at Tikal shortly after 6am. We decided to have a guide as it only cost slightly over 2 GBP each and he turned out to be very good. As we walked through the jungle to the first set of ruins we saw Spider monkeys in the trees. Most of the ruins are still unexcavated so there are many temple shaped hills with trees growing over them. Most of the unearthed temples can be climbed, which gave great views of the other temples peeking through the jungle canopy. During the day we saw more Spider monkeys, coatis, lots of birds and three tarantulas. The temples around the main plaza were the most impressive but I also enjoyed climbing the largest temple which gave us the view of them over the jungle. Because we were still recovering we got the 12:30 bus home but we still got ~6 hours at the site so were still able to see the majority of the major temples.
