We got the local bus from Flores to the Belize border and crossed over to the Belize side on foot after answering a few customer service questions about how we enjoyed our stay in Guatemala. Katy was flagging so we caught a 10 mile taxi ride from the border to our hostel in San Ignacio. As Katy was still recovering we decided to have a 'slow' day looking around the town.
The next day we walked to a Mayan ruin just outside of town called Cahal Pech - it was much smaller than Tikal but it had been significantly restored unlike the temples at Tikal which still look rugged. We then went to the local Saturday market where we got a few things to make a cheap lunch - 5 bananas cost us 17p. And then we moved on to the iguana sanctuary which was situated in a posh hotel out of town. We arrived too early for the tour so we waited on the terrace with a couple rum cocktails and pretended to belong there. The iguanas were great, we got to feed them and hold them. The babies were the best and the guide put all 18 on me at once.
On the 8th June we paid for a tour of the Mountain Pine Ridge area just out of town. No one else joined the tour so it became a private tour. We first stopped at a ginormous cave (Rio Frio Cave) which was easy to walk around inside and then were taken to some small pools (Rio On Pools) where we had a swim and then finally we had lunch at a much larger waterfall (Big Rock Waterfalls). After lunch, I (Simon) climbed up to jump by the side of the plunge pool and jumped in after a bit of hesitation. There are so many different tours available in San Ignacio and we couldn't afford to do them all but I was happy with what we managed to do before we moved off.
