Today was a day to marvel the stark difference between nature and man... And note how dominant nature is in this battle!!
We started off our morning with a delicious fresh fruit and granola breakfast (really good hostel this must say!) Cancun seems to have a simple but very effective bus system... We caught the R1 bus to what is known as the "Hotel Zone" and we drove right to the end of the zone to a state beach called Playa Delfines! My word!! Words literally cannot describe the beauty of the scene there... I am fortunate enough to have been able to entertain my "travel addiction" and I have never ever seen water this colour! It was so awesome that we couldn't stop staring and marveling how "there are no word" and "how is this even possible"?! We eventually got over our shock at the pure beauty and found ourselves a thatch umbrella - quite an easy task given, I assume, it was a Tuesday morning, and lay there reading, chatting and snoozing... I am so so lucky. Every now and then (more often than not) we'd look up and lose our breath again at the Gulf of Mexico sea! The water is also so warm and so calm so swimming was just the most magical thing to do... We spent hours there and only at about 3 when the hunger bug really hit did we decide to part ways with the most beautiful beach in the world!
We caught the bus back to the heart of the Hotel Zone again and after walking around the commercialized mall (this being such a contrast with the natural beauty we just experienced) we found a spot which offered us mediocre food but an incredible view! After eating, we walked along the beach front of the hotel zone for a bit and then decided the sun had taken it out of us (tough lives!!) so it was time to head to the hostel for a snooze... I managed to buy a light sleeping bag (note how unprepared I am for this journey!!) in case our future sleeping arrangements aren't as comfortable haha... And then we chilled in our room for a bit, booking our accommodation for Isla Mujeres. We were feeling so lazy and tired but knew we had to suck it up and have one night out in Cancun as this is one of the things it is known for! (Fun fact for the day courtesy of Sarah's travel book: Cancun was only "discovered" by the Mexican travel board in 1975!! And it took 25 years for the hotel zone to get to where it is today - after much local and foreign investment! I was shocked to see how recent all this development is!) The Frith brothers were in Cancun so we made contact and after much effort, we showered and got dressed and headed for a dinner first (Hard Rock Cafe - an example of a typical American chain that can be seen all over Cancun) and then decided NOT to go to the famous Coco Bongo (just don't think we had it in us...) and rather joined the boys at Mandala for a beach party! A jol is a jol is a jol but the setting here was perfect, the music was awesome and it was so so nice to see Frithy and Shaun! We also enjoyed the usual people watching... Frithy made me laugh as he said he could spot we were South African from a mile away because of the way we were dressed (most girls were only rocking bikinis) and acting (not trying to get with every male specimen that walked past!!) haha... Highlight of the evening was the bikini contest, featuring every nationality under the sun except South Africa haha... Canada took it in the end, in case you were interested, much to Russia's disappointment! We had an awesome night dancing and just enjoying the Mexican night life! We called it a night around 3 and on our way home we were bombed with offers for taxis home, beads, puppies (?!?!?!) and even pizza being carried around in a bag ready for you to buy there and then!
After a bus ride and a taxi ride (we got off at the wrong stop and were hopelessly lost haha).. We got to bed! Cancun has been so good to us! Bring on the rest of Central America!!
Lesson of the day: Always always put sunblock on your back!
Moment of the day: Every moment spent looking at the sea...
