Today marks the beginning of a whole new travel adventure! By chance a few weeks ago a friend from school popped me a message on Facebook asking where my travels were taking me in May... I responded by saying I had no plans but I knew I wanted to travel some more... Turns out she had had enough of her job in Jo'burg so she had resigned and was looking for a travel buddy :) Cue Sim! So here we are, Sarah Hellings and me, in Cancun, about to start a Central American adventure!
I arrived from Fort Lauderdale quite a bit earlier than Se (all in the name of budgeting and cheap flights) so I took a "yellow taxi" shuttle to our hostel called "Mundo Joven" in central Cancun! Must say after having travelled in quite some style in my employed years, I was nervous of what awaited me in a hostel, but I was suitably impressed with our private room and the setup! Definitely worth the cheap prices if this is the standard! We're quite lucky as most people have paved the route for us and have made some solid recommendations so will make the decision-making much easier along the way!
I waited for quite a while for Se but didn't mind as I caught up on my West Coast diary and managed a fab Skype chat with my dear friend Nicola (my Lou)... Always good for the traveling soul to speak to your best friends from home!!
When Se did arrive, we caught up and got an idea of what each of us was thinking for the next few weeks and then we decided to catch a bus to what is known as the "hotel zone" to walk around a bit and grab a bite to eat! Of the little I saw of Cancun when driving in with the shuttle, it is absolutely gorgeous! The sea is a blue unlike anything I've seen before!! However it is a very "Americanized" city - which makes sense given their biggest tourist group comes from the States - but it sort of takes away from what you would expect in such a place... We ended up at a restaurant which we likened to a Mexican Spur haha... The waiters were full of energy and every few minutes they would burst into dance and song and would pull us up to join... at one stage our waiter "Angel" started making paper roses out of serviettes and straws and sticking them in my hair! haha... We were quite taken aback by the constant flurry of activity but hats off to the Mexicans for their hospitality and weird entertainment :-) We were both tired so we headed back to the hostel and have been pouring over websites, blogs, travel books and advice from friends trying to get a bit of a plan together for the next few weeks... So exciting!!
It's awesome to be here and I cant wait for our journey ahead!
Lesson of the day: Ola chica!
Moment of the day: The quick glimpse caught of Playa Delfines when driving into Cancun... Blue beauty!
