Today started off bright and early once again as we had to catch the first 6am bus to Puerto Viejo (so as not to waste the day)... It was about a 4,5 hour bus ride but very pleasant as we could all sleep and chill out... We stopped for a bathroom break and grabbed some smoothies and before we knew it we had arrived in the cute little Caribbean coastal town of Puerto Viejo! We had booked ahead at a hostel called Rocking J's and were able to get a free shuttle to the hostel... It's a very cool hostel where you have the choice of normal dorms, camping, or even simply hiring a hammock to sleep in haha... This town is cool! So glad we came here...
After a quick connect to wifi and a few chats back home, we geared up and headed to the beach, making a quick stop for lunch (didn't end up eating as I had a bit of a sore tummy...) We walked about 1km to the nearest beach and settled in this little piece of heaven - a super quiet surfing beach with thick jungle vegetation behind it... The waves were huge and we swam for ages at a time just loving being in the sea once again! Barbs and I took a walk along the beach to get informed about possible surfing lessons and we have decided to just do it so surf will be up tomorrow morning first thing :) Can't wait!! We spent the afternoon swimming and chilling and it was just stunning... At about 5pm we walked into town - such a divine vibe and has such character! We drew some money (ridiculous currency in Costa Rica called Colones - 500 to 1 to the US dollar?!) and we were enticed to a spot for dinner where there were literally 6 fresh red snapper fish waiting to be cooked for us... Best decision ever!! The fish was absolutely outstanding and we were all just super quiet enjoying this incredible meal... We were well entertained throughout the meal by the stoned owner of the restaurant who only wanted us to have the best evening... We also learned the fate of many of the silly crabs trying to cross the road while traffic was passing by... Splat! We were horrified... But our walk home revealed this was a regular occurrence and we literally had to dodge the dead crabs ;)
Our hostel is pumping tonight but we are in no mood to join in the heavy dance music so we have instead been named "nerds" and have showered and headed straight to bed... Surfing tomorrow morning!! Have always always wanted to learn!! I can't wait :)
Lesson of the day: Don't leave your only hat behind on the bus (I clearly don't learn...)
Moment of the day: Swimming for hours in the Caribbean Sea on the coast of Costa Rica!
