Vicky and Natalie's Adventures
After leaving Brisbane we headed back down to Byron Bay because we loved it so much! We spent our days on the beach and our nights in the bar... shocking behaviour! We also managed a bit of shopping too. The people we met were so laid back and there was so much going on. One night there was a big Aussie band (The Cat Empire) doing a charity gig in the middle of the street - it was very cool though we didn't stay very long. We met a superhero - just wait for the photos! After Byron we headed up to Noosa. Neither of us quite knew what to expect. The atmosphere was similar to that in Byron but the place was less geared towards backpackers - sounds like a good thing but I'm not sure it was. Again we met some awesome people and had a party in our room one night which was so much fun! We spent a day walking in the National Park which made an interesting change though we did make our way to the beach at the end of it! We spent one evening in a place called Rainbow beach... sounds impressive huh?! Well, it wasn't so great. There was nothing much going on and you really couldn't get a good view of the rainbow cliffs beacuse most of them had been blocked off - admittedly for regeneration but it was disappointing all the same. I did find a really cool sandblow though where sand had been (did I give it away?) blown inland to make essentially a big mountain of sand. There were great views of the coast and as you walked you saw loads of different coloured sands... it really made up for the disappointment of the beach. We then headed up to Hervey Bay from where we took a 4WD tour of Fraser Island. This was fantastic! Unfortunately out of 10 of us I was the only driver - scary considering I'd never drived a 4WD or diesel vehicle in my life and suddenly I was responsible for getting us all around the island for 3 days! Still, once I settled into it I loved the driving... it was halfway towards driving a truck! We didn't get stuck though I did puncture a tyre driving too fast over some creek. The island was stunning and bar a little part of the headland was entirely made of sand. It was huge and had the most stunning lake I have ever seen in the form of Lake MacKenzie. We got to see a fair amount of the island and I couldn't get over how much was covered in vegetation! It was such a good few days and though our group could have been better there were 3 other vehicles from the same company that we spent time with. We saw lots of dingos and a couple of snakes but none of them were man enough to take on the cowering mass of people we were! We've mangaed to land ourselves a lift up to Airlie beach in a campervan that we refer to as the 'Bart-Mobile' with 2 lovely girls from England. Wohoo... we're off sailing in the Whitsundays!
