I had to leave Turkey to change my visa from a working visa to a tourist visa. We chose to do this by taking a day trip to the island of Kos, which is a stone's throw from Bodrum. The ferry trip took about an hour.
We had no specific plan as to what to do - other than wander, and perhaps to read our books if we got bored. Fortunately there was a map on the wharf where we landed and it gave us a few ideas on what to do, so off we trotted and let our instincts take charge.
Within minutes we were wandering through the Police Station that had been the Governor's House (and many thing in between, including the Nazi HQ during the occupation) It was in front of an old square. Well what do you know, there's a jewellery shop there, and it's having a sale. That needed investigating, and we ended up purchasing a few lovely things for various people.
We than came across some old Roman (and earlier) ruins and had a good look around them before walking along the waterfront for a while and then back towards town. Kathy was telling me at this stage how lucky I was that it was Sunday and all the shops were closed. Well the next port of call was the old city. It was abuzz with restaurants and shops, nearly all of which were open. We ended up restricting ourselves to purchasing a lovely linen tablecloth and matching serviettes, but that took a while and the inspection of countless other shops. What with that and the jewellery we did pretty well for a couple that between them didn't have one Euro, and in a place where using a credit card is anathema. We didn't even have any money for lunch! But American Dollars still open doors like you wouldn't believe if your purchase is big enough.
By then we were both pretty tired, so we headed back to the ferry 30 minutes earlier than planned. I'm glad we did as the wind was up and there are only a limited number of seat between decks. We got a couple of the last!
We join the gulet tomorrow. I'm not sure what access we'll have to the internet on board, so this may be the last entry until we get to Istanbul in a week.
