Sid and Sasha's ramblings around the planet
Allo all,
Well we've just returned from a couple of days in Kaliurang,a hill resort 25km north of Jogja, which is on the slopes of the Merapi volcano. Yet again we were the only foreign tourists! Rose at 2am this morning for a guided walk through forest to a viewpoint with amazing views of Merapi. Obviously due to the earthquake in May and the subsequent eruptions, it isn't possible, or remotely safe, to get very close, but the views were tremendous and we saw the lava flowing down the east side (photos to follow).
Just planning our next move... Fly out of Jakarta on the 25th to Kuala Lumpar so deciding how to fill the next couple of weeks... A combination of a couple more volcanoes, a hill resort, a National Park, a jungle and the capital should do it.
Other exploits to date:
Explored the 'kraton' (Sultan's palace) although this sounds far more exciting than it actually was.
Travelled overland by every means possible (nearly) across Lombok, Bali and Java and experienced some very colourful journeys, particularly on public buses and economy class trains where we've had the opportunity to chat to locals (as opposed to being given the hard sell all the time!)
Spent a night in a town where we were literally the first white faces ever to be seen (other than on screen). Thereon ensued much staring, whispering and touching in the supermarket. Had our photos taken a few times by Indonesians posing with their family and friends. Kind of makes us feel quite like circus rejects or performing monkeys, but this has lessened as we get used to it!
Experienced traditional Indonesian breakfasts (soup, meat, vegetables, all covered in chilli sauce). Awoke yesterday to be handed a plate of red hot fried noodles with an egg at 8am. All very strange and incredibly savoury at that time of day.
Met the Indonesian version of Manuel from Faulty Towers in our last hotel. Not a word of English he could speak and communicated by grinning inanely at us until we just said 'yes' to whatever it may have been.
Met a lovely girl called Dewi who is a few years younger than me and is now my pen pal!
Seen some incredible volcanic sights and experienced altitude sickness at 2350m (what a wuss).
That's all for now folks,
Sasha and Sid xxx
