The hog roast on the last night at Wayalailai was very nice and as expected we drank beer and danced till the early hours on the patio! The following day I said my goodbyes to all the staff, the village and the people i got to know who were staying there with me. This included 2 brothers from Canterbury and a couple from Haywards Heath (Small world!) and we agreed to meet up for a night out in Brighton when we're all back from our travels. That afternoon I got on the boat and went North for two hours to my next island, Barefoot.
Barefoot had three beaches and small dorms all across the beach that opened out on to the beach which were rather lovely! The evening i arrived they cooked dinner via a method called lovo. This is a traditional way of cooking where they cook the food by digging a hole in to the ground filling it with rocks and then make a fire over them to make the rocks very hot. They then wrap the meet in palm leaves and place these on the hot rocks, cover them in more leaves and then bury them under dirt and leave to cook for 2/3 hours, the result was a very very nice meal! The night followed by a limbo competition and then a hermit crab race which was all good fun! I then stayed a further two nights there and spent the majority of the time playing volleyball and snorkelling! The snorkelling at this resort was awesome across the three beaches and i saw some more sharks, an octopus and amazing reefs.
After my three nights at Barefoot i headed up further North again to the very tip of the Yasawa Islands. Here i stayed at a resort called Safe Landing. I only ended up staying there one night as they switched their power off at 10pm so had to sleep in 30 degrees night temperature and near 100% humidity without any breeze! Slept for all of 2 hours! The following morning though i took a boat trip to the Sawa-i-lau limestone caves which were so awesome. They were huge and filled with natural water that you could swim in and could then swim down under water and come up in to another cave which was pitch black! This is where part of the film blue lagoon was filmed.
When i got back to the resort i boarded the boat to go to an island directly opposite called Coral Reef where i stayed for three nights. This was a really great resort and all the staff were down on the beach singing, playing guitars and dancing to welcome us on. The first day there i did a boat ride out to the middle of the sea between two islands where a sand island just suddenly appears at low tide which was very beautiful! That night, myself, a guy from Sweden, a Chinese guy, a Welsh couple and another couple who ran the dive shop there stayed up to the early hours playing drinking games... Hangover in that heat isn't the best! The following morning i thought a swim would clear the headache so went out in a guided snorkel tour to see the huge clams they have there which are amazing. That afternoon i went on another snorkel trip to a beach where the 3 turtle resort is. The beach and sea were incredible and the fish would just swim all around you in huge groups and come right up to your face! The 3 turtle resort costs about 1000 pounds a night to stay at which i didn't really get as i was staying all of 500 metres away for much less! That evening i decided to trim my beard which had nearly a months growth on it and i was starting to mimic Tom Hanks in Castaway! I've also been asked by four different Fijians on four different resorts if i'm in the army?!
The following evening we got quite a massive surprise as we were told the president of Fiji was going to stay! He was travelling around to see the damage cyclone Evan had caused to the villages on the islands. He turned up on a boat with body guards, the head of the Fijian army and the chief of the Yasawa Islands. We had dinner with them in the evening and drank kava and beer with them all till the early hours. The laid back Fiji way makes me laugh, I was on the beach with the president whilst his body guards were on the decking drinking kava and rum! The president then went to bed as the body guards stayed up drinking till 5am!
My last resort was Blue Lagoon which is more of a luxury resort and i ended up staying there for 3 nights. Didn't plan to do that in the beginning as you have to pay a bit extra to stay there, but i met some really cool people and i loved the resort! The first night we had dinner followed up by games that resulted in winning bottles of Champagne. The first game was limbo, which was lucky as one of the girls in our group was about 5'2 and won that one! The second game was running down the beach, necking a glass of beer, spinning round on the spot then running back. Being four english uni grads in our team, we had finished before the other teams had even had their last person run! So another bottle of Champagne for us! We then went on to drinking games after finishing off the champagne and some big time yank came over to our table with a photo of his car on his phone saying it was a one of a kind and if any of us knew hewould buy us a round. The picture went round the table, no one knew, and came to me last. I didn't have a clue what the car was, but he turned away so i quickly tapped the screen and saw the picture was saved on his phone as the name of the car! So i played dumb for a while and then told him and got it correct! True to his word everyone got a drink and even better than that he then left his tab open which we fully utilised for the night! The beach at Blue Lagoon is absolutely stunning and the other 2 days there consisted of swimming, fishing, snorkelling, a movie night on the beach where we watched Life of Pi under the stars and a hell of a lot more drinking!
On my last day i headed back to the mainland, got me a huge burger from hard rock cafe and went to a hostel for an early night as i had to be up first thing to catch a flight to New Zealand. I am now at my resort in Auckland, New Zealand (which has a hot tub on the roof!) and getting myself ready for the mentalness that i'm sure the Kiwi Experience will deliver starting in a few days!
