I arrived in Fiji yesterday morning to be greeted by a Fijian band playing in the airport! After sorting a taxi to the marina and a boat to my first island i learned all about 'Fiji time' very quickly! They are basically extremely laid back people who don't really have a concept of time, which works perfectly with me! After having a lovely fry up and couple of beers in the marina, i got on the boat which took me to my first island, about an hour and a half journey. The islands are stunning and range in size from tiny, fitting just a hut and a beach, to large with high landscapes. My first island is beachcomber, 'the party island'. I checked in yesterday, then went and did some snorkeling followed by dins and drinking a bunch of kiwis under the table! This morning i was up early for an excursion i booked yesterday. We boarded a speed boat to travel to a larger island (possibly the quickest i have ever traveled on water, i think we were in the air more then on the water!) and on that island went to a local school and looked around their village. It had been hugely effected by the cyclone, but everyone there was in good spirits with big smiles on their faces, like all Fijians seem to be! From there we boarded the speedboat again and went across to the island Castaway was filmed on. We got the chance to walk around the island, then snorkel around it. Great experience! When i got back to the island im staying on i decided to go for a snorkel and swam out quite far on the reef, to a point where i seemed to be surrounded by sting rays! Swear my heart just stopped beating for a minute! Amazing creatures though. Im now about to have some dinner and a few more beers before i board the boat tomorrow to go up North to some larger islands where ill be line fishing with the locals and hiking up to the summit to watch the sunset! Also a choice of swimming with reef sharks, but not sure im quite up for that one yet!
