After a tearful goodbye to everyone in Tamarindo, I arrived in Montezuma, a very small beach village. Stayed in a great hostel on a hill so the views of the sea where amazing. On my second day, Isabel turned up as a surprise with her boyfriend Jose and friend Franzi! I did a tour of Isla Tortuga which is beautiful and we got to see a turtle swimming by the side of our boat.
Next stop was Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean coast, but I had already booked a speed boat to Jaco and the other three had booked a ferry so we went our seperate ways from Montezuma and planned to meet in San Jose to get the bus to Puerto Viejo. Well, my journey was very amusing...10 people, all our rucksacks and two surfboards in a tiny speed boat! I was clinging on for dear life, trying to stop myself and my rucksack from going overboard every time we hit a wave! I also had the joyful sight of the man sitting opposite me unknowingly flashing to everyone for the whole journey! Then the boat broke down and then we saw what looked like the fin of shark...but thankfully it turned out to be a manta ray instead! It was swimming right next to us and was bigger than our boat too, an amazing sight! After all that, we arrived late to Jaco so I missed my connecting bus to San Jose. After waiting for numerous phantom buses, I got a ride in a taxi all the way to San Jose with two english guys - the 2 hour ride only cost 40 quid and they wouldn't let me pay anything! Once in San Jose (about 2hours later than planned) I couldn't find Isabel and the others anywhere. After doing a taxi tour round all of the bus staions, I gave and checked into a hostel...only to find they had emailed me and were waiting in McDonalds for me! Turns out their ferry was late too etc etc so we ended up staying one night in San Jose. Jose took us to the ghetto of the city called Guadalupe where he grew up, but after walking round for about 10mins we all got scared and went to the cinema instead!
6am Saturday morning, we finally got the bus 4hrs to Puerto Viejo. I love it here, the water is crystal clear and the vibe is very chilled out, lots of reggae music and caribbean food - a complete contrast to the Pacific coast. Me and Franzi rented bikes yesterday and cycled 11km to another beach. But on the way back, it rained so hard and we arrived in Puerto Viejo absolutely drenched, which the locals all found very amusing! Then I had my hair cut because I was starting to get dreadlocks and couldn't actually brush it anymore - bargain at 3 pounds! All in all, a very productive day I feel!
This morning, I had to say goodbye to them all again - Isabel and Franzi are off to Panama and Jose back to Tamarindo. Not sure what my next plans are and Semana Santa (Easter week) makes it harder to travel because the Costa Ricans celebrate it big time! But I shall keep you all posted. Hope you all have a great Easter, I am very jealous that I won't have any eggs!
Lots of love xx
