Day 62, 63 and 64
Our bus trip from the highlands to Melaka went well and we arrived late that afternoon. Our guesthouse (Apa Kaba) was more like a homestay in a traditional Malaysian house than a hostel, which was nice. We got a quick orientation talk by the owner and headed out to the centre of Melaka town for some food. Melaka was a fairly old, small town similar to Hoi An in Vietnam, although we didn't think it was quite as nice.
After a few too many early starts we finally got to have a lie in and didn't get up for breakfast until 10am. Breakfast was included in the price, and consisted of Nasi Lamak, sticky coconut rice and some sort of curry cornish pasty (weird but quite nice). We walked around the old town to get our bearings. We climbed to the top of the main hill in town, which offered some good views, and looked around the old ruins of a church built for St Francis (now home to baby monitor lizards). After lunch we decided to go on the river cruise, as it was cheap and a good way to see the sights. We even got to see some more resident monitor lizards, which were basking in the trees along the river. We then headed to the Maritime museum mostly because it was in a big wooden pirate ship so looked quite interesting, and was at least a good photo opportunity. It was a very hot day and so we found a nice lil cafe where we had the best banana and chocolate milkshake!
On our last full day in Melaka we Went to the Stadthuys museum, mainly because we were running out of things to do in the town. We got bored fairly quickly in there but it was more difficult to find your way out of than Ikea. We looked around the many souvenir/quirky shops on Jonkor street. We spent the rest of the day chilling out in a nice cafe where we had strawberry lassi, which is an Indian style milkshake made with yoghurt instead of milk, and had scrummy cakes!
We enjoyed Melaka, but felt like we could have spent less time there than what we did. Singapore was our next stop so another early morning bus ride awaited us.
