Shaun on the Road
A quick joke for you all. How do you know that you have been in Asia for too long? You see a motorbike with three people on it and realize that there is room for 2 more. Sad but true, this is the case right through south east Asia. Anyway, here is what I have been up to since I last wrote.
Got into Vietnam without problems. The bus went to the right boarder crossing and we only had to pay a 'stamp fee' of 2000 dong (about 15 or 20 cents Canadian). These customs officers obviously do not get paid enough. I also realized that people of this region have no idea how to get into, form, or recognize a line. They simply go right to the very front and push into turn. There are some things that colonial rule did not ingrain into these people I guess.
I spent a couple of days in Saigon (also called Ho Chi Mihn City). The first day I went to the tunnels famed for there use by the Viet Cong in the Vietnam War. Oddly enough the Vietnam war is refered to as the American war over here. The tunnels are pretty amazing. They are very small and cramped. They stretched for some 250 km's in that region alone. We also went to a shooting range where you can fire any Vietnam war era weapon. I just watched, but there was some pretty cool stuff. The AK 47 was probably my favorite.
From Saigon I went to Dalat, which is a city in the highlands. It was quite a bit cooler there, which was a nice change from Thailand and Cambodia. I met up with two other travelers and we rented scooters. Taking our lives into our own hands we braved the roads to find waterfalls and lakes. A very fun ride, if not a little death defying. Who says you cannot go the wrong way down a one way street?
The next day we rented bicycles and rode to the coast. This was amazing as well as tiring. It is mainly downhill, but we biked for about 8 hours. The stretch is 110 km, and the day was none to cool, especially when we got into the lowlands. It was well worth it, but I will not be getting on a bike for a couple of weeks at least.
We came next to the city of Nha Trang, which is on the coast. This is also where I currently am. It is hot here, but still nice. I signed up for my PADI open water scuba dive course and finished my first day today. It was fun, but a little scary at times when your instructor turns off your air without telling you. At least you know what to do. I am looking forward to tomorrow when I can start diving in the open ocean. Should be a blast.
