Shaun on the Road
Hey all. I guess I can pick up from where I left off. I left Bristol on the 14th and took the bus up to Dublin. It was a long day trip, but that is quite routine at this point. The trip was made worse when a dozen pre teen boys got on the bus. I now believe more than ever that there should be age restictions on cell phones. Why does anyone who is 10 need a cell phone? I am 22 and I don't have one. There is the possibility that these kids are more socially connected than I am, but I don't want to think about that possibility.
Got into Dublin and spent a day in the city. Following this I went down to the Southwest corner of the Island, to a town called Tralee. It is a great little town in a beautiful setting. There are great hills surrounding the community and they are all lush and green. I found out why very soon. It rains here every single day. In spite of this I rented a bike and was going to bike down the peninsula that extends westward from Tralee. I got about 3km before excessive rain put a dent in my plans and I headed back for town. I had to stay another night, which dissapointed me, but it turned out alright because I met this group of locals who invited me out. They had thick Irish accents and I could barely understand them when they talked amongst themselves.
I headed out the next day (Sunday) and was rained on a few times. I learned to watch the clouds rolling in and managed to time my stops in towns with the rain. I still got wet, but made it into town without problems. The drive was very nice, but long, and it took me over 6 hours to do the 55km between Tralee and Dingle, my destination town. I stayed at a great little hostel in town and headed out again the next day to bike to the end of the peninsula. I was rewarded yet again, because the views over the ocean were amazing. The green hills with increadibly blue water and golden beaches dotting the coast were breathtaking. Rain was again inevitable, but I was prepared and again stopped at stregic spots. I biked back to Tralee the following day instead of Wednesday, as I orignally wanted to, because the weather forecast was showing more rain than normal for Wednesday. Despite more rain and a flat tire, I arrived in Tralee a very exausted and happy man. Needless to say I slept like a stone.
I took the bus back into Dublin today and will stay here until tomorrow (Thursday) evening, when I fly out to Glasgow. I am taking a week long tour of Scottland starting on Sunday, and I am really looking forward to it. It will be good to travel with people for a while.
As an aside, if any of you are planning to travel around the UK, flying is the way to go. I am flying to Glasgow for €5 and from Glasgow to London for £2. This excludes tax, but you can't help but feel like you got a good deal.
