Shane and Sarah's Adventures
Hi All
Now in Dar es Salam awaiting the ferry to Zanzibar.
Made our way down from Nairobi into Tanzania over the last week or so. Stopped for three days in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Had an amazing time there and many highlights. As we drove in to the Serengeti we were lucky enough to witness a Cheetah kill a baby Wilderbeast. It was like a documentary, we watched the cheetah stalk it's prey, go for the kill and then the mother wilderbeast charged the cheetah and saved her baby. Unfortunately for her, when she went back to the herd she left one baby behind. Widerbeast have terrible eye sight so the baby could not find its way back to the herd. The cheetah waited patiently and when the time was right chased down the baby wilderbeast. All this action was within 20 metres of our vehicle! The next day was a full day of game driving and again we were lucky enough, firstly to spot a leopard and secondly to watch the same leopard kill another baby wilderbeast. It was a case of harsh realiity actually, as we watched the leopard playing with the wilberbeast for more than half an hour - letting it run away a bit before catching it again etc. The wilderbeast had the guts to try and bunt the leopard on a number of occasions but it was all fun and games for the leopard, which waited the 30 minutes of so before going for the kill shot. The next day was game driving in the Crater and the highlight has to be two cheetahs which walked over 200 metres to come and sit right beside our vehicle to try and get some shade. They were less than a metre from our faces. Quite and experience looking a wild cheetah in the eye from that distance!
Other highlights included a close encounter with two bull elephants, watching lions eat a buffalo and more pink flamingos in the Crater. Incredibly hot and dusty as the expected rains are yet to arrive. Managed to get a swim in at our campsite last night in Dar es Salam which we were all holding out for!
More soon from Zanzibar.
