Shane and Sarah's Adventures
Hi there,
Well we finally left Nairobi after what seemed like a million years there and headed for the Masai Mara where we drove through the Rift Valley and got some great pics. It was interesting passing through Masai villages where tin sheds had signs stating they were 'hotels'. We camped that night in the game park and slept with the sound of wild animals and bugs. We even had security people who would take us to the toilet holding spears just incase a lion came into the camp.
We spent the day yesterday in the Masai Mara game reserve where we spotted 3 of the big 5 (Lions, Buffalo and Elephants). We also saw a Cheetah and her two cubs on a hunt and the mother took off after some Wilderbeast which we were very lucky to see on a game drive. Unfortunately she didnt make a kill but it was pretty exciting for us all. Saw an amazing aray of animal and bird life and cant wait for our next game drive now.
Last night we visited a traditional Masai village where they showed us through their mud huts (made of sticks, mud and cow pats interestingly enough). It was pretty stinky but amazing all the same how these people live. The girls of the village performed a song for us while their little kids ran around half dressed with lots of dogs and chickens and goats! That evening the men of the village came to our camp site and performed some traditional dances for us and also did the 'jumping' that the Masai do (they get very high and apparently the highest jumper in the village gets a free cow). They then pulled us girls into a dance with them which we later found out was 'a wedding dance' so I am probably married now to one of the villagers...he has a bad deal as I dont have any cows to give him for my dowry!
Today we were up at 4.30am and have been in the truck all day making our way to Kisumu which is situated on Lake Victoria. Tomorrow we will continue our truck journey to Kampala in Uganda and then on to Kisoro in Rwanda to see the Gorillas. At this stage we will have to cross the border into the Congo which is pretty exciting.
Its pretty hot (around 35degrees) but loving it all the same.
We cant download all our photos so far for you as we forgot the connection cable so you will have to wait for our next internet stop probably in a few days.
Lots of love
Sarah and Shane
