Selina´s Travels
Woke up ready to kayak for the whole day!
got picked up at 8 o'clock at the YHA hostel and headed down to the kiwi kayaks office in Richmond.
After a quick stop here we headed off to Marahau where we would start the day.
At this point, with my fear of water, i was slightly nervous but ready to get stuck in anyway. we got all out kayaking gear and then got a water taxi up to Bark Bay...the starting point for our kayaking adventure!
The jet boat ride was fantastic, the sea was quite rough because there was a lot of wind so this just made the ride more exciting! We got off at Bark Bay, put on all our gear and had a safety/instruction briefing.
At this point i was really nervous and we decided that Beth would steer and paddle and that i would go in the front and navigate and paddle :)
As soon as we turned the corner out of Bark Bay i was so scared. the sea was really rough and i though we were gonna capsize. Two of the other kayaks nearly went over purely from the waves and at that point i though that i wasn't going to make the whole five hours!! When we got past this stage however, the guide reassured me that the rest of the day would be on calm waters so this was a relief!!
That was true and for the rest of the day you could really appreciate the beauty of the national park. We stopped for lunch at Torrent Bay and then kayaked all the way back to Marahau. The scenary was amazing and at the end of the day, although my body was aching, i was so glad that i had done it.
Got back to the hostel at 5 and Kevin (the hostel manager) had bought lots of drinks for us for his 50th birthday so it was quite a fun night from there on!
