So the shuttle that waws supposed to pick us up we never found. We were searching all over the train station for this guy and never found him. So we sadi screw it and we bought tickets for the Circumvesuviana (Cher-cum-ves-u-vi-an-na) Say that 5 times fast, I dare you. Anyway, this is a really sketchy subway system that would take us right into Sorrento. We had our wits about us and did not encounter any theft or pickpocketing (yet). We must have looked pretty confused when we were actually waiting for the subway when all of a sudden this girl named Manuela approaches us and asks us if we need help. We told her we were gonig to Sorrento and that would be the subway coming up next, right? SHe said no, it owuld bethe one after that. If she had not approached us, I don't even know where we would have ended up. And then as we are making our treck to our hotel from the train station with our bags on our backs we are just about to head in the wrong direction again when I see this random person who happened to know exactly where our hotel was and was able to give us correct directions! Its times like these when I feel like something bigger then me is involved. ;)
So we get into our hotel (which calls itself a hostel, but we have seen know sign of hostelness at all) and then we get into our room.......and our mouths drop. It is the BIGGEST room we have been in for our entire stay in Europe. By American standards, its like the size of your average hotel room. But, after being in very small European style rooms you are suddenly so grateful for things like: a comfortable bed, a bathroom that two people can fit in, a room two people can fit in, counter space in the bathroom, your own shower and toilet. It really is the simple things........ And then to top it off we also have a balcony and a mini fridge! This place was a bargain and we feel like we are living the high life!
SOrrento in itself is the most beautiful city ever. As far as plain beauty goes, it trumps Vienna, Venice, Florence AND Rome. Coming here as our last stop was the best idea becasue after the hustle and bustle of Florence and especially Rome it is so nice to come to a quiet romantic town like Sorrento. SInce we have been here not one person has tried to shove a rose in my face telling me its free and then asking Sean for money, not one person has tried to sell me a knock off purse, not one person has tried to shove these rediculous light up fly in the air toy things. ALL of which has happened in every other city we have been in. Its wonderful. We are able to walk around, enjoy each others company and just take it all in......
So yesterday we walked around, bought some Limoncello (which Sorrento is known for anything lemon and wood related) opened the bottle and enjoyed it while overlooking the beautiful Tyrrhenian Sea (yes I had to look that up). We ate dinner at this place that was recommended to us by the hotel and while we were sitting right on the edge on the ocean the food was not so great and overpriced. We got totally swindled, but who cares? We're in Sorrento.
Today we planned much better. We basically wlaked and shopped all day long, ate gelato and randomly ran into this Aussie named Catherine. She found us actually by asking if we wanted her to take our picture as we were walking along the side of the road. After the picture we all got to talking and bacially shes this 30 something (maybe 40) with a 15 year old son who was travelling all throughout Europe on her own for a month doing a whole Eat,Pray, Love type of journey. We talked to her for almost an hour while she talked about her experiences and us ours. SHe also recmmended this great place for lunch and that was a GREAT reccomendation. We ate a LONG lunch in thins beautiful garden eating procuitto and mortadella with varius different cheeses that I dont even know what, drank wine and beer, ate a sea food pasta and capped it off with an expresso each. It was fantastic. After we wlaked around more, went to the market to buy some food for dinner and just spent the reast of the day taking pictures, eating gelato, and ejoying our last non-traveling day in Italy.
