Returning on the morning ferry we were treated to really calm waters and hundreds and hundreds of seals, penguins, pelicans and other seabirds as well as a small pod of dolphins - all further evidence of the abundant fish in this area. Also, with clear skies we could see the high white Andes in the distance. As we drove north and neared Puerto Montt the views became even more spectacular as Volcans Osorno and Calbuco loomed ahead. Having already checked out Frutillar on our way to Chiloe, we decided to return to relax and enjoy its 'Alpine' lakeside setting. It was a glorious day and we found a room at a little German hotel (Am See) right on the edge of the Lake from which we were able to look over to Volcan Osorno. After all the driving, we just wanted to wander and take in the sunshine and Frutillar was just perfect. Like some other towns in the Lake District, it has two sides to it: an upper town, Alto, which is an everyday Chilean town, and a lower or lakeside town, Bajo, which is much more touristy and upmarket. The Bajo area was a quiet peaceful place with a lovely feel to it. But there is something odd that we should also mention. All along the shoreline are little hotels, restaurants etc but half way along a massive building jutting out onto the Lake is taking shape. It is strangely incongruous and somewhat out of place but it is the soon to be completed International Performing Arts Centre. It's objectives are honourable - to bring high class performers to Chile and to help educate young people into the world of art, music and drama. There are stages that will allow outdoor and indoor performances using the wonderful backdrop of the Lake and its many volcanoes. But we wondered if they couldn't have built such a massive theatre up the hill, still with a wonderful unobstructed view, which would have avoided breaking the lakeside promenade in two! We enjoyed a really good meal at the hotel restaurant which was buzzing with what looked like an office party at the next table. At another table a single man was getting much attention from some of the young ladies at the office party! He turned out to be in the area looking for a spot to build a new hotel. Seems this area is really thriving. Lot of loveE & M xxxxx
