We arrived in Fiji on Sunday 11th March in the afternoon. We had a shuttle booked and were transferred to our hotel in Nadi Bay. We stayed at the Nadi Bay Resort Hotel for one night before ferrying to the islands the next morning. Everyone seemed really happy and friendly. We had dinner and a few drinks the first night at the hotel, and a guy was singing in the background.
The next morning we got up early and had a cooked breakfast then got on the bus to go to Denerau Marina where we would catch our ferry to the islands. The first island we were staying at was Waya Lai Lai, it took 2 1/2 hours to get there on the ferry. When you were there a smaller boat came to get your luggage and we got on too. We arrived on Waya Lai Lai and stepped out of the boat into the clear ocean. The staff were on the beach singing to us to welcome us which was nice. We then went to our lodge, which was quite basic but we had our own room and bathroom. On the islands they have set times for breakfast lunch and dinner, and they bang on the drums to let you know when it is ready. Also during the day there is no electricity, it comes on at night but then turns off again at mid-night. The first day on Waya Lai Lai they did a Summit Walk in the afternoon. It was sunny and 30 degrees so we weren't going to do it but decided we didn't want to miss out. We started and it was really steep and very slippery. I stopped and went back half way up but Scott went all the way to the top and saw some great views of the island and islands around us. The next morning we went on a snorkelling trip to the reef. There were lots of corals and fish we then got to one spot where the tour guides started feeding the fish and then we could see about 6 reef sharks below us. The tour guides would grab the fish and feed them to the sharks. The sharks swam so close that we touched them as they went past. One guy lifted a shark out of the water so we could touch it, the shark didn't seem to mind. It was a bit scary at first but the sharks were really friendly. The second night on Waya Lai Lai we joined the locals in one of the Fijian traditions. Drinking Cava. It basically looks like muddy water and is made from the roots of a Cava plant. Its supposed to have the same effects as drugs, we only had a couple of scoops of it.
The next day we transferred to Naviti island and stayed at the Korovou resort which was an hour north of Waya Lai Lai. When we got there again we were greeted with singing but also got a flower in our hair and drinks. All the Bures (huts) you stay in were right on the beach and were seperate to each other. Scott and I were the only ones in our group that got upgraded to a Deluxe Bure but we weren't complaining. Our Bure was huge, it had its own living area, fridge, bedroom with a king sized bed and the bathroom was nice too. Also they were made better so no bugs could get in, everyone else had to sleep with lots of geckos. This resort also had a pool so we stayed around there most days. We also met a Canadian couple and an English couple who we were with most of the time. The first night at Korovou the staff did a Fijian welcome dance which we also had to do. The second night we played games, which got quite competitive especially with the Dutch. The beer was quite cheap on the islands too so Scott had a few of these with the lads.
We transferred back to the Marina last night and are staying at the Novotel for two nights before our flight to Bangkok on Sunday. Been upgraded again here too so its really nice and we are happy to have air conditioning again. We loved the islands and would come back again! Now we are preparing for our 6 week trip around South East Asia. We have spoken to a lot of backpackers who have been already and all we have heard is how beautiful it is, cheap and how much there is to do there. Can't wait..
