Murramarang National Park - blog 15It's been a week since I left Manly. Andy, a regular guest at Jellyfish offered me a ride to europcar (where I hired a car) at Kings Cross in Sydney. The day I left it was raining cats and dogs: good day to leave! My car is the cutest: light blue and tiny, but not as tiny as thee tin can on wheels I had in Holland. First stop was Cronulla… no waves… Second stop was the Royal National park and my first surf of the road trip. Surf beach: Little Garie. The waves were really nice. Only one guy in the water, Murrey, nice bloke. He surfs every single day… what a life! Anyway, had some good waves, 100 times better then the Manly - waves. And only 66 km from Sydney…After a 2 hour surf I drove to Thirroull, where I had some dinner (cereals). After dinner: bedtime.. first night in the car.. pretty comfy.Next day… flat.. drove to Woonona for a nice surf and then towards Wollongong, where I met Brad at the parking space next to the beach. Brad is a really nice man, a nurse, a Buddhist, and he was on his way south, waiting for a call for a job in Woga Woga. We had lunch together and, since we both were heading south, decided to travel together for a couple of days. That day we ended up in the Brooderee National Park at Jarvis Bay. First we went to Wreck bay, where there was a beautiful sunset (see pictures). Brad bought himself a stove, so we had a cup of tea on the beach. We slept near Cave Beach, where I had a surf the next morning. The waves were really small (1 foot), but really powerful, so that was fun, and at least I had a surf! After the surf and some food-shopping (dinner: pasta and sauce) we did the Murray Walking trail (5,5 km), which was beautiful. After that we went to Iluka, where we had dinner and tea and saw some kangaroos!!The next day, after yoga, we headed towards Ulladulla. Checked the waves in Bendalong, but no swell. On our way back to the highway we made a stop. I'd seen a sign saying surfboards and Brad was keen on having a board as well. He's done some surfing in the past. That's where we met Mark Rabbidge: Once the second best longboarder in the world, married to Pam Burridge, once the best female surfer of the world. He has got his own surfboard company now: one in Ulladulla, in America and in Hossegor. I told him about the Soul Surfers Foundation and he told met to write him an email (Sabine!!) so that maybe he could sponsor us. After some nice surf stories, we wentto Ulladulla to pick up a nice second handed board for Brad. A surf at Dolphin Point was next. Very windy, small waves… fun though. Tried to sleep there, but the mozzies (mosquito's) killed me! Woke up at 4.19 am and the zooming was so annoying. Couldn't get back to sleep. So I took some pictures of the sunrise and as Brad woke up 1.5 hours later, we decided to drive to Bawley Point where there were going to be some waves (said Mark Rabbidge). As we arrived there, I crashed in my car, then on the grass and I had a loooong sleep. Later on a surf with Brad. After the surf we tried to find a supermarket, but no luck: was burned down! Brad run into an old colleague, Maz, who happened to have a Dutch husband, Ron. She invited us for some tea and we ended up having dinner there and sleeping in a real bed!! That was nice, as was the 2 minute hot shower! The next day Brad and I went for a surf with Simon, one of Ron and Maz' son (16 yrs). He's a bodyboarder and pretty good!! Brad ended up taking some pictures, really nice ones of Simon, but none of me. The moment I caught a nice wave, he just packed his camera.. Anyway, the ways were pretty big and there were lots of close-outs. After breakfast, Simon took me to Bawley Point, a reefbreak… pretty scary! You had to peddle towards the rock, then take off and continue the first part of the wave nearly over the rocks (as I saw it). It was a right-hander as well (and I'm goofy)… I really tried and could have had 2 waves, but then there were other people on it (closer to the reef)… Well, not my kind of wave (yet). The bizar thing was that there were even children out there! Kind of felt like a chicken ;-)It was great though to see how the surfers surfed that wave. As we got out, Simon went to surf Guillotines, another reef break and even more scary!! (check pic's) as I chilled out and took some pictures. After another short shower I reorganized my car and we headed of to find this relly big old tree, which we didn't find btw. We did find a berry farm, 12 km unsealed road (Brad's car). The farm was closed (so no berry picking), but we bought 1 kilogram berry's and got some peaches for free. We had an early night at Bawley Beach and went to Ulladulla the next day. No waves… summer in Australia… Right now were in the National Park Murrangarang, where they took the picture that's on the front cover of the lonely planet! Lot's of nearly tame kangaroos (and pretty birds) around here and the beach is beautiful. Last night the mozzies liked me a lot again.. well I get used to it.. A kind of early night (10 pm) and I woke up this morning at 6 am, did my yoga and we.ve just had breakfast. A small surf later on and then to Batemans Bay to put this blog on the net.
