After finishing off The Great Ocean Road, Bea and I took the freeway from Torquay and finally arrived in Melbourne. It was nice to come across the big bridge and see the cityscape of Melbourne to the left hand side. It didn't last long though before we were in the thick of it and travelling to our hostel in St Kilda. I chose the one in St Kilda because it was the only one available with a car park. I hadn't actually realised how far outside the CBD it was, never mind, excited to be in Melbourne!
The place is nice though, everyone seems friendly. The room is crammed, smells like guys and the heating is broken, yep, it's definitely a hostel!
This is going to be an overview of my first week in Melbourne which was spent in St Kilda, as once again no one wants to read about me doing every day stuff like washing lol.
Melbourne I have discovered has a tram system which runs all over the town and requires you to have something similar to that of an Oyster card in London in order to travel on them. MYKI cards they're called, great, except it costs me $7 a day when I want to go into the CBD from St Kilda lol.
Anyway, St Kilda. One of the nice beach areas of Melbourne. It has an array of bars on a nice little strip and a couple of nice beaches with a pier where you can see the Penguins at night! They also have a theme park called Luna Park (with a very creepy entrance, some guy smiling and you enter in through his mouth...I later discovered that he is called Mr Moon...) nothing like Alton Towers but more how Dreamworld used to be in Margate. Suitable for smaller kids lol. I also discovered a couple of nights in that the area we're staying in has a BIG red light district with some of the most dodgy looking 'women' I have ever seen lol.
We took a walk down to the beach area and the marina (some very nice boats in there) where as I said earlier apparently you can see some little penguins. Of course, my luck being the way it is...the pier was under construction and we couldn't walk down there...D'oh!
The rest of my first week in a new city was spent going round copying my CV, joining the State Library of Victoria and I caught up with Ryan one night when we went to a free comedy night at a place called Spleen. St Kilda is nice and the hostel does have its up points but this part of Melbourne would be better visited in the summer, so next week we're moving into the CBD!
