I will admit I was sad to leave Koh Tao but more than ready as I wanted to see something new. However, I am not so sure I was prepared for the journey to my new destination of Krabi.
It started off well, we got picked up on time by the taxi pick up truck to take us to the pier, at which point we had to exchange our tickets for a boat ticket. The sea was already choppy and the boat was swaying from side to side as we tried to board. I have never been on a sleeper boat before but imagined it would be similar to one of the buses. I was right. Lots of little mattresses everywhere with 120 people crammed on board. I was just praying I wasn't downstairs in the pit. I should have slept right through due to last nights exploits at Star Club but it was like a floating sauna there was no hope of me getting any sleep at all tonight.
Arrival at Surit Thani was swift and we were greeted with a lady shouting out 'airport airport' at the pier. This was fine...till you'd been sat there for almost an hour it suddenly became irritating and the subject of much piss taking from tired passengers. We were still not on route to Krabi as we had to go to another tourist office and exchange our tickets yet again. Bundled with all of my things into the front seat of a tuk tuk I was suddenly quite happy I wasn't in the back after taking a quick look round. We arrived at the tourist office and were greeted by some Houdini of a tourist agent...I swear she was just at the pier when we drove off! Ho Hum.
The fun really started when a European guy (I am not sure which country) started a fight with the owner of the travel agents. First he wouldn't put his bag somewhere, then he called the guy some rude names and then he wouldn't take his shoes off like everyone else. Needless to say the Thai owner lost it and started screaming at 6 am. A while later (after all that excitement) we got bundled into a mini bus and started the drive to Krabi. I may have fallen asleep for a minute or two but with all that sharp breaking I wasn't asleep for long!
Arrival in Krabi was just as rubbish. Getting dropped off in the middle of town at a random travel agents office meant finding my own way into town without a map...oh the fun. Seeing an American couple with a map I thought I would ask them for help...yeah they sent me in the wrong direction and no matter how many times I told them it was the wrong way they would not accept it. Talk about confirming the stereotype! I made it to the hostel and went for some definitely well earned sleep.
Dinner was cool, I went to the night market and got stared at for being the only western person walking round but it was cheap and I got something small so it was worth the looks. I had intended on going to bed but got watching some really random film and ended up talking to a guy called Matt from Preston, which lead to a few games of pool and playing Dominos till about 12.30 am...another phase of getting old...learning to play Dominoes.
Tomorrow sees me going to Tiger Cave before heading onto Phi Phi. Still no word from the Animal shelter yet but still got my fingers crossed I'll get a placement for a couple weeks on Koh Lanta.
The picture is of the boat on the way from Koh Tao. Thank heavens I was on a middle bunk!
