This morning we crossed the border from Northern Territory into South Australia. I hadn't realised how close we were to the border camping last night but when we woke there was a great big sign saying welcome to South Australia which we obviously never saw in the dark lol.
I did have a laugh travelling to Coober Pedy, there are so many rude road safety signs! All with things like don't do this or that and then with some random swear word written using a picture of something. Apparently they're all over the state hmmm...must see how many different ones I can spot lol.
The drive to Coober Pedy didn't take long at all, we arrived there mid afternoon and went and checked into the Radeka backpackers underground inn. From the outside it looked relatively normal but once you were inside you could have just stepped into one of this houses from Star Wars lol. It was so dark down there and we both laughed silly once we saw the dorm room...there was a coded lock to get into the door and then you got there and there was just a big hole in the walls with some beds inside...where's the door?!
The following day we decided to take a look round some of the things to do in town. Which to be blatantly honest...there isn't much. We went and took a look at the Opal shops and run the usual gauntlet of 'can I help you' when you walked into a shop before disappearing to the Josephine orphanage for Kangaroos. The guy there was so friendly and we went out the back to feed some adult kangaroos. They are so used to people that they have now become domesticated and cannot be released into the wild but it was nice having them eat from my hand although I could have done without all of the hand licking lol. The guy then bought out a baby kangaroo which was about 8 months old and still relying on being bottle fed and sleeping in a makeshift pouch. So cute! Hopping about for a few steps and then absolutely shattered again...back to bed!
We also took a look at the giant winch in town and another look out before getting on the road and trying to get as near to Port Augustus as possible. We ended up going into 2 different camp sites due to mistaking one for an overnight site. Never mind, bit more of a relaxed start tomorrow!
The picture is of one of the underground corridors at the Radeka hostel.
