Arrival in Penang took about 13 hours from Kata Beach, Phuket. It was nice however to come across the Penang bridge and see Georgetown lit up across the water. Still, somehow we managed to get into 3 different minivans and also pull into a layby and stop for no reason after the border as it was suspected our minivan driver had a license to drive but not to carry any passengers...
The hostel is nice, air conditioned with little beds each with their own privacy curtain. A little bit of a strange set up but at least everyone is friendly and breakfast is included which is good. The only questionable thing at the moment is the ATM I was told to go to. It ate 2 people's cards whist I was in line and then I just thought b***** this I am finding another one! About an hour later I managed to get money and return to the hostel where I went to sleep at long last!
Today I woke up rather late (late by my standards since I am only here for 2 days) due to the time difference. We are yet another hour away from the UK being in Malaysia. I decided to go walking about the town today and marked off on a map lots of historical points of interest. *laugh* I cannot possibly forget you Campbell since there is a whole street called Campbell street in the middle of Georgetown! I also took a wander round a shopping mall called the Komtar, a little bit strange, I have never seen so many electronics shops in my life! I also took in the Jetty, Queen Victoria clock tower and Fort Cornwallis which was built in 1796 after Captain Francis Light discovered Penang back in 1786. (Little bit of history there for you! *smile*)
Tomorrow I hope to get out of Georgetown and go and see some different things on Penang Island. Thinking about seeing The Air Itam Dam, Kek Lok Si Temple, Penang Hill and perhaps a trip to the Botanical Gardens. A lot for me to pack in but if I hire a moped I should be able to do it!
Tonight I went to get some food from a Hawker style place called Red Garden, it was really nice and I could have eaten myself fat at the amount of food that was on offer! Afterwards I got chatting to a guy called Tom who is also going to Australia at some point but like most other people he'll be starting in Sydney.
The picture is of a strange set of phone boxes at the bottom of Love Lane where my hostel is located in Georgetown.
