The journey to Siem Reap was so long! We travelled from Bangkok, setting off early morning and grabbing taxis to the bus station. We hopped on a public bus and drove about 6hours to the Cambodian border.
The bus was surprisingly ok and I was highly amused when the local man sat next to Felicity quite happily let one go without even a flinch! Thank goodness I wasn't sat too close...
The border crossing went smoothly and once in Cambodia we drove a further 2 hours before reaching our hotel in Siem Reap fairly late on.
A quick shower and change and then we headed out for dinner at a small street cafe for some local cambodian grub :-) oh and a well deserved cold beer! Afterwards it was a quick trip to see the night markets before heading back to the hotel shattered and in need of sleep ready for a full day at Angkor Wat...oh and the 4am start! yes you read that correctly!
So 4:00am...
I'm shattered, I'm feeling a tad on the grumpy side and I'm hoping this sunrise is worth it! Fortunately it was and I soon found myself wide awake and ready to explore. Once daylight hit we headed to breakfast which was the first time we met the $1 kids...'One Dollar, One Dollar' selling fruit, postcards, bracelets and god knows what else!
Even more alive now I have a full stomach, we set off with our guide around this huge huge place!! I'm not going to list every detail about the temples because you'll probably all drift off with boredom! I'll keep it brief!
We started exploring some of the temples and also took the hot air balloon for a birds eye view over the Angkor temples.
One of my favourite temples was Ta Prohm, a stunning location which is featured in the movie Tomb Raider. The whole area is interwined with tree roots, making it look incredible! We explored the area for about an hour taking photo after photo before making our way back to the mini bus.
Lady Lady one dollar one dollar! three for one dollar! ok 5 for one dollar! 8 for one dollar! just one dollar! Yes the children were back! Everything here appears to be one dollar! They followed us all the way to the bus with there baskets of bracelets and postcards! Bless!
We explored Angkor Wat for what seemed like forever, you cannot possibly do this in a day it was simply exhausting! We headed back to the hotel for the remainder of the afternoon, which we spent at leisure...
Well some of us headed into town..well pub street to be precise! And we found cheap cheap cheap beer which was surprisingly nice! We had a quick bite to eat and kept on drinking!
The afternoon passed quickly (nothing to do with the beer-honest!) and before we knew it, it was time to head back to the hotel, shower, change and meet for dinner with the rest of the group. I have to say I think we were all a tad tipsy by this point!
Dinner was fun, and it was happy hour so buy one get one free :-) and awesome pitchers! We got steadily hammered and afterwards headed to a few bars, including a gay bar which I loved haha.
The night got messy, the morning even more so as I woke at 12pm with a killer hangover and the dread of having to get on a boat...
At 2pm I met a few of the group in reception ready for our trip to the floating islands and a visit to the Orphanage. The journey was hell. The road was bumpy, the boat was bumpy and I felt like hurling the entire afternoon much to Stephens amusement.
The floating islands were interesting to see though and I managed to focus long enough to take some photos. What surprised me the most was the children in little bath tub things bobbing around in the water and holding huge snakes! They were everywhere...children and snakes!
We spent an hour or so at the islands before heading back to shore and to the Orphanage.
The orphanage was better than I expected and it was good to see the children happy and so many of them either at school or been taught onsite by volunteer teachers.
We were shown around the orphanage and met the children on the way back from school. I was feeling slightly more human but I was ready to head back to the hotel!
That evening I went to KFC haha and then to bed!!
The next day we were leaving Siem Reap and heading to Phnom Penh...
