Sarah and Nicola Matthews' Travels
Hey all,
Still having an absolutely amazing time in NZ. On Tuesday I did the one thing i have always wanted to do which is swim with dolphins and it was brilliant!!
We decided to go on the 5.30 in the morn trip as we were told it was the best time so we were slightly bleary eyed! but once we saw the beauty that was ourselves in full wetsuits including head wetsuit we were wide awake!! We were really lucky and it was an absolutely gorgeous morning and as we went out in the boat the sun was rising so it was really beautiful.
When we spotted dolphins the guide told us all to slide in to the water off the back off the boat and then i got a bit scared!! The first time i put my masked head in the water and saw a dolphin swim right under me i wasnt sure if it was better to have my head above the water or not!! But the fear soon went and soon i was bombing around with my snorkel on looking at the dolphins! We saw dusky and common dolphins and we went in for 5 swims, each was about 10 mins long so we had ages with the dolphins. There were absolutely hundreds and hundreds of them, at points i had about 10 swimming under me. It was just as fun to be above the water as they were all diving in and out and jumping around.
The best thing was when you saw a dolphin and swam round in a circle because they would follow you round and round in a circle swimming, looking you right in the eye like a challenge - however they are a lot more graceful than me so they could always go around a lot faster than me!! All in all it was definitely the best thing i have ever done and i cant believe just how many we saw.
After dolphin swimming in Kaikoura we went to a place called Abel Tasmen which is a national park. We stayed in a place called Old McDonalds Farm so obviously i couldnt stop singing the little nursery rhyme the whole time! It was a really cute little place with llamas, pigs and ducks just wondering round! we adopted a little duck which we called punky cos of his wicked hair - pics to follow.
Yesterday we went sea kayaking in abel Tasman park which was really fun. We kayaked all along the coast which was really beautiful. We also kayaked out to little islands where seals lived and they were all swimming around by the kayaks which was really fun to see.
The trip was 18km long so we are definitely feeling it in the arms today but we were really lucky again and it was absolutely scorching so it was an absolutely gorgeous day.
We had a mammoth drive today so we will be taking it easy with a few beers tonight.
