Hampi was amazing! It was full of great rooftop restaurants and chilled out bars with cushion seating which passed away many an hour :) We ate great food including boiled vegetables without masala - yey!
We arrived really early and got a baragin price on a rickshaw which actually took us to where we wanted to go! The Shanti guest house was basic but really nice - filled with backpackers and with great views over Hampi.
Hampi is a UNESCO World Hertiage site with ancient stone Temples dotted all around. We hired bikes to see all the main sites but they did not have brakes or gears (which is not good in a town full of hills!) We got lost on our way to the Royal Centre because Sarah cannot read maps and got confused between the train track and the river (but in Sarah's defence, the map was shocking!) We really enjoyed seeing the Queens Palace and ancient stables - for Elephants not horses! We could not stay long as we were chased away by a three legged howling dog with rabies....!
The Vitalla Temple and the Chariot was amazing - all the stone carvings were intact and so intricate....it was a shame that all the Indian men did not appriciate their rich Indian heritage...they ignored their guide and took photos of us instead!
We walked back from the Vitalla Temple along the river at sunset. It was so beautiful - the sun was glistening in the water and the stones - at which point we started to...tried to... recite poerty until we were rudly interrupted by a herd of cows! We also met a group of young girls who taught us how they wash their clothes in the river and tried to steal our cookies!
We arrived back at the hostel desperate for the loo and Sarah giggling so much that a little bit of pee came out.... only to find a fat old Monkey doing his nails (and eating a coconut) was sitting on the toilet! Luckily, the hostel manager along with his shotgun and dog, Motti saved the day and scared all the Monkeys away! The next day, realising that we were starting to look like Monkeys, we decided it was about time to sort the hairy leg situation and went for a wax....India style! We went into a woman's kitchen where the table was covered in PVC and the hot wax was boiling on the stove - we still have the burn marks!
Hampi was definitley a place to remember!
