One of the best things about English is its everywhere. One of the worst things about English is its everywhere.
This is fantastic for travellers, pretty much anywhere in the world you can use English to communicate.
However it is bad for those native speakers that are trying to learn another language. Its too easy to slip into the comfort of speaking English, specially when those around you are so eager to practise their own.
This is where Europe has it right, bilingualism from birth. I know it is stereotypical to assume all Europeans are fluent, or even speak English but it is much more common here than at home.
There was a family: a grandma, a mother and a little girl. The grandmother was speaking Spanish to the little girl who was responding in Spanish. The mother was then speaking English in a thick british accent to her daughter, who was responding in Spanish. The mother would occasionally switch into Spanish but as English appeared to be her preferred language, this was infrequent.
This bilingualism from a young age is how it should be.
