Sarah's and Becky's Travels...!
After leaving Thailand heartbroken, we got our last Asian bus to Penang, Malaysia. We stayed in an awesome hostel with the bubbliest owner ever! However, we didn't feel very comfortable in Penang, the people are quite threatening and intimidating and we've returned to a place where comments and leery men are rife. So tolerance levels are low!! It is also quite run-down and dilapidated, but the people do not look poor at all.
We ended up going to the cinema on two of the three days we were here, in the safety of a shopping centre! We also went up a tower to the 60th floor to get some nice sunset views of the city, and one day ventured to the beach. We had a pretty nice and chilled day, until a man came and sat with us and wouldn't go away! We tried to explain we wanted to be alone, at which point he simply stripped off his clothes, went for a swim then joined us again! After feigning sleep and pretending to be engrossed in a book, neither of which worked, we just walked away. We decided we would hang around to see the sunset, but then we got sworn at by a really rude stallholder!! At this point we'd totally had enough so just went back to our hostel.
On our final day we went to the Snake Temple, which sounded really cool - it was described as being full of huge snakes curling around pillars next to smoking incense sticks - but it in fact consisted of some very fake-looking snakes perched on wooden frames on the altar! We were convinced they weren't real, until a guy picked one up and it appeared to come alive! It was seriously bizarre!! Then it was time to leave Malaysia. We were quite happy to leave as it had taken us so long to relax again after India and then spending after just 3 days in Penang we were totally stressed out again!
