Today, we headed out to the Christiania area to see the new Opera House. Christiania is a notorious hippie haven, and is rather like visiting a third-world country, the group visited it on Sunday, while I was sick. The Opera House was pretty impressive, the roof consisting of a cantilevered structure, approximately 90 meters in length. We didn't get to go inside, as it was closed, but we did take pictures through the glass of the interior, including the 'pumpkin', as the enclosure around the concert hall was called.
We took a water-bus to the other side of the canal, and walked past the Black Diamond Royal Library, and Jewish Museum on our way to tour the Hotel Fox. The Hotel has 61 rooms, designed by a multitude of designers from all over the world - I took a few pictures of the rooms we got to see. You can see all of them at their website, which includes virtual tours of the rooms: http://www.hotelfox.dk/
We ate a quick lunch and went back to tour the Danish Jewish Museum, designed by Daniel Leibskind. (no pictures, since they weren't allowed, and my camera isn't very covert in size for playing spy and sneaking pictures). The museum is built within a previously existing structure, and consists of crazily angled planes that redefine the space, and contain the displays for the museum. http://www.jewmus.dk/?language=uk
Finally, the group went in to see the Black Diamond, which is the modern addition to the Royal Library. It's a pretty amazing space, including a lobby space open to the ceiling, 6 or so floors above. The two solid forms on either side hold the offices and books, while the open lobby space contains the circulation.
We walked back to the hotel, and after dinner, Becky, Shandra, and I visited the Danish Design Forum. There were displays for current 'hot' fashions in the Danish clothing world on the main floor, and products/projects that had been awarded design awards upstairs. Downstairs, there was a mock 'store' which 'sold' ideas, needs, wants, and other things in packaged product form. There were also statistics about the overuse of resources, etc. We also got to see Tivoli, the Copenhagen amusement park, all lit up, on the way back to the hotel.
