Sara's Travels 05-06
This is going to be a short and sweet entry about Canberra.Basically we left Melbourne and got the over night bus to Canberra. We had heard that there wasnt much to do, so we were only planning on staying one night...if that!
The bus journey was ok...better than I thought and I actaully managed to get comfortable at some times! We managed to find a hostel, we freshened up then took a wander around..the guide books advised not doing Canberra on foot, but with no money for transport (and to be fair it was sooo dead that there wasnt much public transport), no car and some calories to burn we set off...on foot! We headed towards the Parliament House (the ONLY attraction in the town!). It took us sooo long to get there and there were not real paths, so we were pretty much walking through the grass on the edge of the road and over the grass bit of roundabouts! weird!
At Parliament House we took a tour around, which was actually really interesting..the guide really knew her stuff! Apparently there was a good view from the room of the buidling, but when hwe wanted to go up there it was freezing and raining...so we passed!
Following Parliament House, we went to a US War memorial, then headed to the National War Memorial....getting majorly lost on the way, meaning a local had to take us there cos we were pretty mcuh heading out of town!
The War Memorial was actually very interesting as there is an amazing museum underneath it. At 5pm a bugel player called \'the last post,\' which was incredibly moving.
With the two places in Canberra ticked off (Parliament House and the War Memorials) we headed back to the hostel to get a decent ightss sleep...following our awful night on the overnight bus!
....Only problem....some random drunk guy decided that it was not that night we were going to get some sleep and started banging on the window insisting that we had to let him in....obviously we had no idea who he was and whether he actually was in our hostel, so we refused...but he persisted and persisted...and got really abusive and aggressive. At one point we thought the glass was going to break...so we got a bit scared. There was no security at the hostel overnight, so we had to call the police. Anyways, eventuall they came and after waking us up at about 6am...the police had taken him away at about 8:30am!! Very eventful.
But apart from that...there is absolutely nothing to do in Canberra and Im surprised I even managed to write this much about it...minus the running with the drunken guy and the police!
We soon let Canberra after the crazee incident heading in to Sydney then out to the Blue Mountains for the week before we hit Bondi.
