I experienced Wilderland for a good week time - a sustainable community nestled in the north island of New Zealand. So, first I want to explain why I am so keen to meet a community. I am not getting a crazy hippi - on my trip though the world I have mission to learn more about different cultures, life styles and systems. And that's what I explored.
On the previous farm I lived I got an impression of a community but it was more based by volunteers and not by convinced permanents who actually live a life in nature. So through a contact I got the great chance to learn more about a real community life.
The people who live here build everything by them self, if it is a house, a street, garden or just turn a old shoe into a leather drink holder. They bake bread, produce jughurt, jam, conserve food for the winter and cook (soo!) delicious healthy food out of fresh harvest veggies and lenses. They let hair grow, get naked into sea or wherever and just don't care.
Wilderland helps develop people: people with experience and understanding of living cooperatively with land, people with a stronger connection with one another and natural environment, people who can help make a richer world. It is an outdoor classroom for curious minds. That inspires me so much.
Think sustainable!
A part of being sustainable is minimising the use of purchased food and household goods, as
well as products containing dangerous or polluting chemicals. I learned to minimise waste and reduce our environmental impact by providing for ourselves from our renewable resources onsite, year-round.
Some buildings are made almost entirely from materials found on the land: wood, earth, clay and stone. Accommodations are simple and unique like simple wooden houses, caravans, tipi or tents.
It's a beautiful valleyed hillside slowly returning to a diverse native rainforest, amongst which a diverse range of organic orchards, gardens and grain crops, showcase a variety of sustainable practices, such as Permaculture and Biodynamics.
For me a great experience for life!
