Wow...so I was doing well with the entires for the first few days, and then it just went downhill from there! I have a feeling this is how it's going to be...updates every so often. But to tell you the truth, I haven't been all that busy.
Monday and Tuesday were our first days of classes. It's like having night class during the day...and I hate night classes. Most classes give a break after the first hour. It is definetly different here! My first class was Analysing Advertising (yes with a s). Melanie, Danelle and I all start at 11am, so we caught the bus to the University at around 10:30am. Mel and I made our way to our first class, and sat down. The class size was so big that they had to bring in chairs from the computer lab. Granted, it's expected that most don't show up for the class...but it was still a bit overwhelming going from class sizes of 30 or less, to a class of close to 100. It's weird to see an Irish professor discussing American advertising. We watched a movie the second half of the class period...one that Mel had already seen. Go figure. After that, I headed off on my own to the business building for Global Communication. I found Becky, Tabatha, Nick, and Brad and we all filled in a row. Once again, a fairly large class size. It seems like an interesting class, having to deal with HOW people communicate in different cultures; both past and present and the different methods they use. Not like our course, Cross Cultural Communication. After that, Becky and I took the bus home and relaxed the rest of the day because we had to be to the campus by 9am for our advising the next day.
Day two was horribly uneventful. Mel, Danelle and I's bus was late in the morning so we were late to our advising...which was basically a professor telling us about the campus and the communications program. Then he signed off on our sheets, and we returned them to the international office so we could be officially registered for the classes we chose. Melanie, Tabatha and I had some downtime before that. I went to inquire about a new DCU ID because I somehow managed to loose mine in the one day that we got it. We then went and got a sandwich at the eurospar on campus, and went over the resteraunt to eat it. Melanie and I wandered over to the huge, tall, lecture hall. It's VERY steep and very uncomfortable. Communication Theories. The one class that I HAVE to take and quite possibly the most boring class on the face of the earth. I'm hoping he progresses more...because at this point in time, it isn't about communication theories at all (like social exchange theories and stuff like that) ... from our one day of lecture we discussed primates and how they evolved using communication. I have hopes of it getting better.
After that it was off to Analysing Media Content. The professor was really cool...however, the class is a continuous class, so everyone had it first semester with the same professor. Thus, everyone knows one another. Making friends is rather hard just because it's spring term, so there's no new freshman on campus...don't get me wrong, everyone is very social; but it's hard to start in on a conversation when two people are already just talking to one another. The class itself seems very beneficial. He went into the affects of lighting and the words that go along with it. I'm excited for our seminars to start this coming week...they're smaller segments of our bigger classes. I'm hoping to meet more people there and get to know the DCU lifestyle. Not having an ID put a semi-damper on Tuesday because they have a club on campus, and you need your ID to get in. Oh well, we will have plenty of Tuesdays!
Yesterday (Thursday) we went downtown and did some shopping and got to take in the sights. It was an amazing time...just wandering around the city. It really made me realize everything it has to offer. I got a few soveniours for people back home, and finally bought postcards so I can start writing the millions that I have to send out. Tonight we went out to Oliver St. John Gogarty's and got to see a traditional irish band in a pub. It was quite an experience...we didn't stay that long because it was really warm and cramped, but I'm sure we'll find ourselves going back there. Purely for the music though...the drinks are all SO expensive here!
I booked a flight to London for 26 Euros (about 50 US dollars) today...I'm super excited to go on our first "big" trip. I'm meeting up with my friend Brittany there. Tomorrow we're heading down to the infamous Grafton Street, and we're hopefully going to watch the Ireland Vs. France Rugby match in a pub. Vinnie's going to come with us...and he's from France, so that'll be interesting to see who he roots for! :P
Until next time, cheers!
