Our Travels
It's grey and damp outside today. What happened to the beautiful spring weather of yesterday! After breakfast we armed ourself with a 'Walk the City' map and set off on a bit of a walking tour of the city. There are some interesting old buildings, statues etc and it was interesting to see the plaque marking the spot where the original settlers landed.
We had a look at the beautiful Flemish Renaissance style railway station and went upstairs to view an exhibition of local art work. Just as we left the railway station the rain started to come down and horrible, sleety cold stuff it was. We are now very grateful that the Otago stadium has a roof on it!
On our way to the stadium we stopped off at The Duke of Wellington pub in Queen's garden. This pub is intensely English to the extent that it only serves imported beer (none of that local stuff!) and we had English pork pie and a pint before heading off to the game. It is a lovely old pub and, needless to say, there were plenty of England rugby shirts being worn today!
By the time we left the weather had really set in. We were treated to icy cold, driving rain throughout the 30 minute walk to the stadium. We were freezing cold and shivering by the time we got there and then had to wait in the rain for 10 minutes outside our entry gate while they let some VIP's in. The VIPs turned out to be the England team so we forgave them after all. They trooped in with heads down against the icy downpour. Not one even glanced to the side and all looked intensely focused ahead of the game.
As mentioned previously we were extremely glad of that roof, and bet the players were too! It was an exciting game, especially if your were English, and great to see our team performing with greater discipline and much more flair than in the previous 2 pool games. The score of 67-3 was a fantastic result for England and it could easily have been more. Romania are no pushover either, you should have seen the size of them!!
After the game was over we had 30 minutes to get ourselves somewhere warm and dry to watch New Zealand v France which, to the great relief of all Kiwis, the All Blacks won although it seemed to us that France played much better than the score reflected. However, as we have said before, at the end of the day a win is a win!!
