Our Travels
We were up and out in good time this morning. After a hearty hotel breakfast we were, once again heading out along the beautiful Otaga peninsula. This time we were on our way to Larnach castle. The sun was shining, but as we reached the castle the mist started to swirl in and it seemed even more like Scotland than Scotland itself!
We spent a leisurely couple of hours exploring the castle, built by William Larnach in the late 1800s. It is an impressive building and great that it was bought and lovingly restored recently by the Barker family. Throughout our visit the mists were swirling around us which was quite spectacular, especially from the top of the tower with the wind howling around us!
We had lunch in the ballroom cafe before exploring the extensive gardens. We enjoyed our time here and would recommend a visit if you have the time. On our way back we took a detour to Sandfly bay nature reserve. In spite of the very high winds this is a simply stunning viewing point and should not be missed if you are in the area. At the risk of sounding boring, New Zealand is just so beautiful! Take the time while you are here to take in the scenery and enjoy the peace and beauty around you.
We drove back to Dunedin city along a different road. It was way high up along the top and at times you could see the sea on both sides of the peninsula. It was such a beautiful journey although very hairy at times with steep drops to the side and scary times when cars were coming the other way.
Back in Dunedin we got that rogue tyre fixed and then went to find Baldwin street, the steepest street in the world - just check the Guinness book of records! We parked the car and walked up. Well, don't you just HAVE to do it? It really is steep and I feel that we did our exercise today and earned that glass of wine later on!
