Our Travels
Difficult to believe, but Simon and I met in person for the first time six years ago today! Just think what we have seen and done since then. So much, but still so much more to do!
After a good night's sleep we met Mike at 6.30 am for our last walk together. It was a little grey and misty overhead but still dry. We have been so lucky with the weather throughout our stay. No rain since the first day. We set off along the Hornbill Trail and soon heard the familiar strong beating of wings and looked up to catch sight of a Wrinkled Hornbill flying overhead.
Our main focus of this walk, however, was looking for the male Argos pheasant. We could hear his loud call and soon came across him standing in the middle of the track. He is a very large bird with a long, trailing tail very similar to a peacock's. In a similar way its tail also shows thousands of eyes when opened. We were able to get quite close and he didn’t seem at all afraid if us. We watched for some time and took lots of photos but he was not in the mood to spread his glorious tail to show us. Maybe on our next visit!
We heard gibbons calling overhead and were able to catch sight of them way up high in the trees. We also heard another loud, low call coming towards us which Mike didn’t recognise and thought it might be a bear. We found this just a little bit worrying, especially when he suggested that we move on quite quickly!
We walked the rest of the trail as the sun rose in the sky and we enjoyed our last walk in the peaceful forest. We have had such a wonderful time and seen and heard so much. So glad we took the time to come here and especially glad that we had Mike as our guide as he has been brilliant.
Back to the Lodge, a quick breakfast then back to the room to pack, but not before one last refreshing dip in our private spa! We were soon eating our last substantial buffet lunch and before we knew it our glorious Rainforest weekend was over and we were in a Land Cruiser on our way back to Lahad Datu. However, our happy surprises weren’t over yet because about 10 minutes away from the Lodge a mother orang-utan and her baby crossed the road in front of our car. Now there’s something you don’t see every day!
