We started the drive to Waitomo at 8:30. New Zealand is famous for its adventure sports and waitomo in particular is famous for 'Black Water Rafting' which includes sitting in a tyreshaped thing rather than a boat and going down the river through pitch black caves etc where you will see glow worms. unfortunately we didnt do this activity purely because everywhere you go in newzealnd on the kiwi bus they offer you activities and they are quite pricey for backpackers, we had a chat together and decided that we would wait until white water rafting is an option as that is something we both wanted to do.
that afternoon we took a walk with the rest of the bus and saw some beautiful scenary including caves, waterfalls and forest land. this was at a place called Ruakin Reserve. Many people had told us that the South Island is prettier than the North Island but at this stage i couldnt quite imagine anything prettier.
we all eventually got to the hostel which was the on;y one in the area. this was the most expensive hostel so far at 29 dollars a night and was extremely disapointing as we had dirty sheets and the manager refused to change them and informed us that the sheets were changed every two days and in order to recieve fresh ones we would need to pay 2 dollar. eventually the bus driver (John) spoke to her and she gave in and gave us some new ones. that evening we cooked ourselves some food and just chatted to someother people who wwere travelling with us and a guy that is doing the North and South Island alone in a car, he was a very bright character and new exactly when and where he wanted to go so was quite happy doing it alone. the following morning the people not doing the rafting waited for them to finish, it turned out to be a ong morning but we were soon on our way to the next stop.
